NEED TO KNOW
Labubus are coming to a screen near you soon.
A movie about the plushy, toothy dolls that have become everyone’s favorite collectible is in the works at Sony Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
A spokesperson for the studio did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
It remains unclear if the movie will be live-action or animated, and reportedly no filmmaker or producer has yet been attached to the project.

Created by Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung in 2015 and produced and sold exclusively by China-based retailer Pop Mart, Labubu collectibles rocketed in popularity earlier this year.
The elf-like character Labubu and her tribe of monsters (including Mokoko, Pato, Spooky, Tycoco and Zimomo) have inspired plenty of merchandise and collaborations with other brands.
Labubus gained in popularity thanks in part to their “blind-box” format, in which consumers don’t know which toy they’re going to get upon ordering. This has led to a flourishing secondary market where consumers have reportedly shelled out six-figure sums to get the toys they want.

Celebrities have also embraced the fad, with BLACKPINK star Lisa using a Labubu as an accessory in 2024. Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, David Beckham and more have since been spotted with the dolls.
A Labubu movie wouldn’t be the first time Hollywood has turned to the world of toys for inspiration.
The animated LEGO Movie in 2014 and the live-action Barbie in 2023 have earned critical and commercial success, and last week it was announced that a feature film based on Mattel’s View-Master 3D image toy is in the works at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
