Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Diplomat season 3!
The political power couples of The Diplomat continue to be put to the test.
On the Netflix drama, Kate (Keri Russell) and Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) have a tumultuous marriage — even more so, after a shocking revelation in the season 3 finale.
At the end of the latest installment, which premiered Oct. 16 on Netflix, it seemed that Kate and Hal were on the road to repairing their relationship. But an unbelievable betrayal left Kate stunned as she realized what now-Vice President Hal and President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) were really up to.
Russell told PEOPLE that being part of the political power couple is “so fun.” The actress added, “I just think the writing of that relationship is so great. It’s such a fun relationship to play because it’s so many things.”
“It’s really interesting — no matter what form their relationship takes, they’re still so connected,” she explained about her on-screen relationship with Sewell “I don’t know, there’s just some people in life that you have that with, and they are that couple.”
So, will Kate and Hal be back for season 4 of The Diplomat? Here’s what to know about what’s next for the Netflix political drama.

Per Variety, the renewal announcement was made in May 2025, months before season 3 debuted in October 2025.
When it comes to the intense events on The Diplomat, series creator and showrunner Debora Cahn told USA Today that the writers of the series “spend a lot of time” figuring out how to increase the pressure on the characters, politically and personally.
“We don’t want to just keep ratcheting things up,” she revealed. “But we do want to honestly look at what are the stakes of the decisions that get made in these rooms. And it turns out they’re big.”

Most of the cast has not been confirmed for The Diplomat season 4, but a few actors are already planning their returns.
Janney and Bradley Whitford, who play President Grace Penn and her husband, Todd Penn, respectively, will be back for the upcoming season. Per Tudum, the former West Wing costars have been promoted to series regulars.
“If there was one thing that surprised me, it was the ease of taking the history we have together and shooting it down a different road,” Whitford told PEOPLE about his latest on-screen reunion with Janney.
He continued, “It felt very comfortable. … We’ve actually done other little things together, but it was particularly fun to bring that history into a marriage.”
Speaking with Tudum, Cahn said, “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … It’s an insane bag of candy. Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”
In addition to Janney and Whitford, series stars Russell and Sewell are expected to come back.
“I love this show. It’s such a great job. I hope it goes on and on. And it’s just so fun,” Russell told PEOPLE. “It’s fun to play someone so smart, so funny, so fierce. She does stupid s— all the time. It’s really such a sweet spot.”
“I love her frankness, I love her bossiness. I love how she is always getting herself into hot water,” she added. “I mean, to lose in a drama as a character is good. To be constantly losing and messing things up, it’s great.”
