The secret is out on We Were Liars.
The Prime Video drama series, adapted from E. Lockhart’s bestselling 2014 young adult novel of the same name, follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind), a privileged teen who spends every summer at her family’s lavish compound on Martha’s Vineyard with her three closest friends and cousins, a tight-knit group known as “the Liars.”
But after a mysterious accident leaves Cadence with amnesia, she returns to the island determined to uncover what really happened that 16th summer — and why no one will talk about it.
Though the final episode reveals the truth behind Cadence’s memory loss in a jaw-dropping twist, the series ends on a major cliffhanger.
Lockhart, who also served as a writer and producer on the show, told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2025 that while there’s no news yet about a second season, We Were Liars is “not a limited series.”
So, will there be a season 2 of We Were Liars? Here’s everything to know about the potential sequel.

In the season’s final scenes, it’s revealed that Cadence’s best friends — cousins Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Johnny (Joseph Zada) and friend Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) — are dead.
Although Cadence has spent the summer talking to them as if they were alive, they actually perished in a fire that she started at the family’s estate. The devastating truth unravels as Cadence’s memory returns, forcing her to confront the full weight of the tragedy.
In the last scene, Cadence runs down the beach after choosing to leave her family behind.
“I wasn’t supposed to run the whole way, the whole beach,” Lind told Teen Vogue in June 2025. “But I did. And it felt so good, actually. I was talking to the drone operator, and I was like, ‘We should just get right in front of her face.’ ”
The actress continued, “I remember I was just running down the beach and it was really far. Then I actually jumped into the boat and took off on it for real. And there was something so magical about that and so real, after all the time and effort and love and energy that was put into the show, there was something really special.”

Prime Video hasn’t confirmed a sequel for We Were Liars. But when asked what she thought of the show’s future, Lind told Teen Vogue that her character has done “the bare minimum” of confronting her past.
“[I saw where] someone said, like, Cadence wiped her hands clean,” the actress said. “And I’m like, not at all really. I mean, she’s literally just doing the bare minimum for what just happened…”
Lind went on to talk about how Cadence’s grandfather, Harris Sinclair (David Morse), threatened to “out” her for the fire if she didn’t stick with the family.
“There’s things that he can use over me for the rest of my life,” she told the outlet. “People died. That’s a lot of baggage that she’s leaving with. She’s not leaving with her hands clean. Her hands have never been dirtier. None of her family knows.”

Though nothing has been confirmed, Lockhart talked to The Hollywood Reporter about Cadence’s journey to separate herself from her family — and how that could be explored further.
“I think in a lot of ways, Cadence’s position is not simple,” the author said. “We didn’t want to dumb anything down, but we wanted to have a feeling of release.”
She continued, “She’s going away from the island, having set herself free from the rigidities, rules, the prejudices, the bullshit of the family. We all know that this can be an ongoing journey to separate from your family of origin. And it’s not a simple thing at all. And so, you know, we shall see.”
A potential second season could also be based on Lockhart’s 2022 prequel novel titled Family of Liars, which is set in 1987 and follows the older generation of Sinclair sisters when they were teens.
Which cast members would return?

If a second season came out that followed the prequel book, then fans would likely be introduced to an entirely new cast. But if the show deviated from the novels and continued with the first season’s story lines, Lind would likely reprise her role as Cadence.
Two of the liars, Mirren (McGregor) and Gat (Maheshwari), died at the end of season 1. But Zada could make a re-appearance, seeing as how Johnny seemed intent on haunting his mom, Carrie (Mamie Gummer).
Lockhart told The Hollywood Reporter that the scene between the mother and her deceased son is a “tip of the hat” to the prequel Family of Liars.
