NEED TO KNOW
Fans likely haven’t seen the last of Benoit Blanc.
First introduced to audiences in 2019, Daniel Craig’s eccentric detective has solved three mysteries across the Knives Out franchise, each unfolding in a wildly different setting with an all-star cast. Blanc’s cases so far have been told in Knives Out (2019), Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which premiered on Netflix on Dec. 12.
“How lucky am I to get to play something like this?” Craig told PEOPLE in September 2025. “That’s all I can think of when I think about this character. I mean, I’ve played [James] Bond and now I’m suddenly playing Benoit Blanc. It’s dumb luck. I’m very lucky.”
As for exactly if — and when — his dumb luck will run out, the British actor said that he’d reprise his role so long as writer and director Rian Johnson writes another Knives Out script that’s “as good” as he thinks it will be.
A fourth film hasn’t been confirmed or announced. But Johnson also expressed his interest in continuing the franchise for as long as he and his star investigator “are having a good time.” The writer-director said in an October 2022 interview with Variety, “I’ll keep making these as long as they let me.”
So, will there be a Knives Out 4? Here’s everything to know about the future of Daniel Craig and Rian Johnson’s hit whodunit franchise.

Though a fourth Knives Out film hasn’t been confirmed, Johnson said he planned to continue the franchise in a December 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly. However, fans may have to wait a while, as he plans to make an original movie before returning to Benoit Blanc’s universe.
That movie in question is set to be a “’70s paranoid thriller” that has a “light sci-fi element to it,” he told Empire in October 2025.
“The most exciting thing right now is this idea I have in my head for the next thing I’m gonna make, and I think ultimately, that’s all you can do, is just kind of follow your nose,” Johnson said.
What would Knives Out 4 be about?

Johnson may be game for another Knives Out movie, but he hasn’t decided exactly what Benoit Blanc’s next mystery will be.
“I have some basic, elemental, conceptual ideas,” the Poker Face director told Entertainment Weekly. “Like, ‘Okay, it’d be interesting if it were this kind of thing’ kernels.”
However, beyond that, Johnson added that he doesn’t “have actual concrete ideas.” “I don’t have a theme yet, I don’t have a location. It’s really pretty vague, and I feel like it’s good to kinda keep it vague until I’m ready to actually sit down and write it,” he said.
While details of the potential next Knives Out movie are still undecided, Johnson said the direction of the mystery will reflect the state of the country — a “vibe check of the United States,” to be exact.
“Part of making these movies, for me, is reacting to the present moment,” he told the outlet. “Not necessarily with current events or politics or culture specifically, but in terms of what we’re all feeling in the world at that moment.”
The Looper director continued, “I like that these movies are not timeless, per se, and that they all have one foot in something that is common to all of us in our present moment. So, yeah, I don’t know. I have a vague notion, but trying to keep it vague until it’s time to actually do it.”
Who could be in the cast of Knives Out 4?

The only recurring character in each of the Knives Out movies is Craig’s Benoit Blanc, who often serves as the main secondary character, aiding the movie’s protagonist in solving the crime at hand.
Johnson confirmed in a November 2025 interview with IndieWire that he would not move forward with another Knives Out film if Craig wasn’t on board.
“For me, personally, these movies are working with Daniel. It’s a partnership,” he told the outlet. “And the instant either one of us feels even slightly like not doing it, we’ll stop doing it.”
While Johnson hasn’t said much about the potential new movie, he has spoken about his dream casting: Meryl Streep.
“If you’re reading this, Meryl Streep,” the filmmaker joked. “I feel like you’d slot into a murder mystery very well.”

Like Johnson, Craig has been vocal about wanting to continue the Knives Out films. But he joked with the Associated Press in November 2025 that he’s learned not to get too excited about the future of anything in this business.
“I’ve been doing this for long enough that as soon as you start counting your chickens on a job, it’s all over,” Craig said.
The actor joked in a joint interview with GQ that the third movie “could have gone seriously wrong” — and the fact that it didn’t could be a sign to make more.
“To have this response to this third one … It makes me feel energized,” Craig said in December 2025. “It makes me feel like, ‘OK, sure, let’s do it.’ But as we always say to each other, unless the idea scares us, or if it doesn’t challenge us, there’s no point in doing it. It’s gotta be fun, but it’s also gotta be a terrifying experience to make sure you’re pushing it on.”
