NEED TO KNOW
After nearly nine years together, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have called off their engagement.
The “Teenage Dream” singer and the Pirates of the Caribbean actor went public with their relationship in 2016 and got engaged in February 2019. On June 26, PEOPLE confirmed that they had called it quits, just weeks after a source said their relationship had been “breaking down the last couple of months and isn’t looking good.”
“They’re pretty much done,” the source told PEOPLE, adding that they “don’t really see them being able to turn things around here.”
Throughout their relationship, Perry and Bloom were open about experiencing ups and downs, including a temporary split in February 2017. But during an April 2024 appearance on Today With Hoda & Jenna, Bloom shared that they made a “daily” choice to stay together.
“I think we kind of just demand that we get up every day, and she challenges me, I challenge her,” Bloom said, adding, “‘I choose you, today, tomorrow, or whatever, or you choose me.’ But it’s a daily thing.”
So, why did Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom split? Here’s what to know about why the Grammy-winning singer and Hollywood actor ended their engagement.

While one source told PEOPLE that their relationship had been “breaking down” for months, another insider gave more details into what led to them calling it quits.
“The split is amicable,” the source said. “They got to a point where they feel there is no going back to a healthy relationship and that it’s better to live separate lives. Katy doesn’t take the split lightly. She’s still doing great though.”

Perry and Bloom became Instagram official in May 2016 after meeting at a Golden Globes afterparty and fighting over an In-N-Out burger in January of that year.
“I met my boyfriend over In-N-Out. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren’t together,” she said during a March 2019 episode of American Idol. “So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend’s hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, ‘Hey that’s my burger!’ ”
The pair got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2019. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that month, Perry shared details about the proposal, which she described as “very sweet.”
“It was Valentine’s Day … we went to dinner and I thought we were going to go see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter,” she said. “We landed on a rooftop [in Los Angeles] — my whole family was there, and all my friends. He did so well.”
A source then told PEOPLE that Bloom had it planned “for a while” and “wanted it all to be special.”
“Katy’s family knew he was proposing. He talked to her parents about it before,” the source said, adding that Perry was “very surprised and shaking with happiness.”
In August 2020, they started a family of their own when they welcomed their first child together, daughter Daisy Dove.

Though Perry and Bloom were together for nearly nine years, the former couple experienced ups and downs and temporarily split in February 2017. During a conversation with Elle that April, Bloom said they remained “friends” and that their relationship was “good.”
“We’re all grown-up. She happens to be someone who is very visible, but I don’t think anybody cares what I’m up to. Nor should they,” he said. “It’s between us. It’s better to set an example for kids and show that [break-ups] don’t have to be about hate.’ ”
Nearly one year after their split, a source told PEOPLE that Perry and Bloom were spending time together, though they weren’t “putting a label on it.”
“They are not girlfriend and boyfriend,” the insider said. “They do seem very happy together though. Orlando always had the nicest things to say about Katy. He loves spending time with her.”
By September 2018, the pair made their red carpet debut as a reunited couple, and moved in together by March 2019.
More recently, Perry opened up about their temporary split and reconciliation during a September 2024 appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast.
“We weren’t, like, really in it from day one,” she said. “I mean, he was in a way, because he had just done a huge time of celibacy, and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to go swim in a different pond,’ but I had yet to do a lot of real work.”
The singer explained that Bloom embarked on a one-week retreat to the Hoffman Institute in California, where attendees “rewire all the bad habits” and “your neutral pathways through different physical activities.”
When he returned home, Perry recalled that he was no longer “playing this cat-mouse game” with her anymore, though she was “used to the push-pull” of their relationship.
“I was like, ‘This is boring. I’m moving on,’ ” she said.
The Grammy-winning artist shared that they only “kind of” spoke during the breakup, but after going on her own retreat at the Hoffman Institute later that year, “everything started changing” and she initiated a meet-up.
“I was doing a show that was close to where he was on vacation, and I was like, ‘I’ll pop over!’ I had promised I was gonna do the Hoffman Process, but I literally was in a bad state,” she said.

In March 2020, a source told PEOPLE that Perry and Bloom were set to tie the knot in Japan in early summer.
“It was all set for Japan with 150 guests. Katy was actually really excited about walking down the aisle pregnant,” the insider said. “They were both so elated that all the wedding details were finally coming together, but they are hitting pause because of coronavirus.”
However, with the COVID-19 pandemic beginning to spread at the time, the pair decided to postpone their celebration.
In February 2022, three years after their engagement, Perry appeared on the Kyle & Jackie O radio show and revealed that they were still looking for a wedding venue — and the pandemic wasn’t exactly going away.
“It’s a destination location that like, you know, we’re still trying for it to work out,” Perry said on the Kyle & Jackie O radio show. “But every couple of months it’s like, ‘New variant! New variant! New variant!’ “
