NEED TO KNOW
After a career hiatus, Kate Bush is ready to make new music.
The English singer-songwriter had been out of the public eye for over a decade after she released her 2011 album, 50 Words for Snow. But in 2022, Bush returned to the spotlight when Stranger Things used her 1985 song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” in season 4 and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart.
Bush began her career with her debut album, The Kick Inside, in 1978, and subsequently released 10 studio albums. Since then, she has only debuted live and compilation LPs and hasn’t performed live since 2014. But after her song’s inclusion in the Netflix show, Bush experienced a career resurgence, with a new fanbase of younger people discovering her discography.
Following a long career break, Bush has said she’s ready to get back to making music. “I’m very keen to start working on a new album,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today program in October 2024. “I’ve got lots of ideas and I’m really looking forward to getting back into that creative space, it’s been a long time.”

In the late 1970s, the English singer-songwriter made history as the first female performer with a self-written No. 1 hit in the U.K. — her debut album’s lead single, “Wuthering Heights” — according to The New Yorker.
In the decades that followed, Bush’s genre-bending music garnered an enduring fan base with the release of her 10 studio albums and dozens of singles, compilation albums and video albums.
Bush has also collaborated with several famous artists, including Prince, Peter Gabriel and Elton John.

Bush and McIntosh welcomed their son, Albert “Bertie” McIntosh, in 1998.
Over the years, Albert has played a large role in Bush’s career, inspiring songs and collaborating on projects with her.
On her 2005 album Aerial, Bush included the song “Bertie” dedicated to her son, but his influence was “all over” the album as well, she told BBC Radio 2 in November 2005. He’s also credited on the song “Somewhere In Between,” according to The Standard.
“He’s such a big part of my life so, you know, he’s a very big part of my work. It’s such a great thing, being able to spend as much time with him as I can,” Bush told BBC Radio 2, adding that she took a while to create the album so she could spend time with Albert.
She continued, “He won’t be young for very long. And already he’s starting to grow up, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss out on that.”
In 2011, Albert’s computerized voice was used as a singing computer program in the 6-minute short film for Bush’s song “Deeper Understanding,” and that same year, he was also featured on the song “Snowflake” on Bush’s Words for Snow album.
In 2024, when Bush released an animated video to accompany “Snowflake” to raise money for children affected by war in Ukraine and elsewhere, she credited Albert with lead vocals in a post on her blog.
“I think his performance is extremely moving and although I’d originally written the song to capture [Albert’s] beautiful descant voice before he entered adolescence, it has taken on a haunting new meaning within the context of this animation,” she wrote.

In 2014, 35 years after the last time Bush played a full concert, she took the stage for 22 shows in London for her Before the Dawn tour, per The New York Times. It was her son who encouraged her to perform live once again, according to The Telegraph.
On the opening night of the show, Bush acknowledged 16-year-old Albert’s role in the show. “He gave me the courage to push the button,” the outlet reported Bush saying on stage. “Thank you, Bertie. It’s been a fantastic adventure so far. And it’s only just begun.”
Albert was also credited as the show’s creative advisor, and both he and McIntosh performed on stage alongside Bush — McIntosh as a guitarist and Albert as backing vocals.
In the program notes for the show, Albert spoke highly of his mother and her skills. “I feel so privileged to be able to work on this project, and have tried to earn my place. My mother is the most talented person I could ask to work with,” he wrote, per The Telegraph.

Following years out of the spotlight, Bush has found new recognition after her 1985 song “Running Up That Hill” went viral in 2022 when it was used in Stranger Things season 4.
That summer, the song reached 1 billion streams on Spotify and topped the Billboard Global 200 chart nearly 40 years after its 1985 release. In a post on her blog, She wrote about the song’s resurgence. “[The song] is being given a whole new lease of life by the young fans who love the show.”
Bush was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023. Though she couldn’t attend the ceremony, she released a statement about her induction on her blog.
“I am completely blown away by this huge honour — an award that sits in the big beating heart of the American music industry. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I never imagined I would be given this wonderful accolade,” she wrote, adding that music is “at the core” of who she is.
Bush has also continued working on new projects, including writing and directing an animated short film in 2024 called Little Shrew, set to her song “Snowflake,” to raise money for children affected by war. In a blog post, she wrote that the process was similar to creating music.
“I love being creative in the visual medium as well as in audio,” she wrote. “Working directly with the animators has been surprisingly similar in many ways to working with musicians, where you are creating through someone else’s hands.”
She still regularly collaborates with her son on special edition albums and packages. Bush and Albert received two 2025 Grammy Award nominations, including Best Boxed or Special Edition Package for the Hounds Of Love the Boxes of Lost at Sea and Best Recording Package for the Hounds Of Love The Baskerville Edition — both of which were art directed by the mother-son team.
In addition to accolades, Bush has said that she’s interested in creating new music. She told BBC Radio 4’s Today program in 2024 that she had felt the urge to “start doing something new” in the music space, and though she hasn’t started working on new music just yet, she’s looking forward to getting back into it.
Most recently, Bush participated in a silent album with hundreds of other artists as a way to protest AI using their work.
