NEED TO KNOW
Sunday nights just got a lot more interesting thanks to HBO’s new miniseries Task.
Created by Mare of Easttown writer Brad Ingelsby, the crime drama follows FBI agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) as he investigates a string of violent robberies in the Philadelphia suburbs led by sanitation worker Robbie Prendergrast (Tom Pelphrey), who steals from drug dealers to support his family.
“It’s always so interesting to me to put what could essentially be a very good person in impossible situations that then their behavior seems bad,” Pelphrey told PEOPLE of his character in September 2025.
The Ozark actor continued, “This guy’s working full-time, raising his kids by himself, doesn’t have much money, doing whatever he needs to do to take care of his family. And maybe we could say, ‘Well, that’s not the best way to go about it.’ But at the end of the day, he really is trying his best.”
In addition to Ruffalo and Pelphrey, the Task cast also includes Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio and Phoebe Fox.
The series premiered on HBO on Sept. 7, with new episodes dropping weekly. Here’s everything to know about the Task release schedule and when new episodes will come out.
When did Task premiere?

Task premiered on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, Sept. 7. First announced in June 2023, the limited series marked the second time Ingelsby has partnered with HBO for a gritty, suspense-driven project.
“We are absolutely thrilled to once again join forces with Brad Ingelsby, the brilliant auteur behind Mare of Easttown,” Francesca Orsi, the head of HBO drama series and films, told Deadline at the time. “Brad’s boundless creativity and unrivaled ability to captivate audiences is nothing short of inspiring, and we cannot be more excited to embark on another journey together.”
She continued, “When the opportunity arose to partner with Mark on another series, we all jumped at the chance to witness him once again breathe great humanity into a new role.”
Ruffalo, who serves as the show’s star and executive producer, told Entertainment Weekly in September 2025 that the drama differs from other cops-and-robbers shows while still delivering plenty of plot twists.
“It’s got a great pulse. It’s moving, it’s exciting,” the Emmy-winning actor said. “And at the same time, yes, you’re going to get your heart torn out!”
How many episodes are in Task?
Peter Kramer/HBO
There are seven episodes in Task, many of which were filmed outside of Philadelphia in small towns like Coatesville, Pa. To prepare for the role, Ruffalo told PEOPLE in August 2025 that he “ate a lot of Philly cheesesteak sandwiches.”
“I just put a bunch of weight on,” the actor said, adding that he also worked with FBI agent Scott Duffey to make sure his portrayal of a detective was accurate. In addition, Ruffalo and the Task cast perfected their Pennsylvania accents by working with dialect coach Susanne Sulby, who also worked with Kate Winslet on Mare of Easttown.
“There’s nothing like it. It’s like the north meets the south, with a mid-Atlantic, it’s the craziest dialect I’ve ever heard,” Ruffalo told EW. “As soon as you get it, it feels like you’re in New York or in the south or somewhere you’re not supposed to be.”
