Sydney Sweeney is addressing those Bond girl rumors.
In Variety’s cover story for its Power of Women issue, Sweeney, 28, addressed buzz that she’s up for a role as a Bond girl. This comes as the prospective role of James Bond himself is up in the air after Daniel Craig wrapped up his time as 007 after five films.
“To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumors, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it,” Sweeney told Variety.

When asked if she’d be interested in playing a Bond girl, Sweeney added, “Depends on the script. I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”
The actress’s name is just the latest to be floated around for the franchise’s next phase. Since Craig wrapped up his fifth and final 007 movie, No Time to Die, in 2021, more than a dozen actors’ names have been raised as possible new faces for the notorious spy.
Actors like Theo James, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill, Dev Patel, Richard Madden and Idris Elba have emerged as contenders in the past few years.
“It’s very flattering to be involved in that conversation at all. But it’s all just talk and I’m sure next week it will be someone else,” Madden said in 2019. Similarly, in March 2025, Joe Alwyn said, “Who wouldn’t throw their hat in the ring?”
Another conversation about the Bond franchise is also at play: should the next 007 be a woman? While Sweeney expressed her interest in the possibility, a number of actors from the franchise’s previous films weighed in with different perspectives.
Two former Bond girls, Gemma Arterton and Eva Green, both said previous that based on the spy’s iconic traits and identity, a woman playing 007 wouldn’t quite make sense to them.
“I’m for women, but I really think James Bond should remain a man,” Green told Vanity Fair. “It doesn’t make sense for him to be a woman.”

Craig’s two cents? Create parts for women and actors of color that honor their stories.
“The answer to that is very simple. There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color,” he said. “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”
