Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for James Gunn’s SupermanDavid Corenswet’s DCU suit might go through a major overhaul after the events of Superman if Clark Kent doubles down on an important decision. James Gunn’s Superman paves the way for several long individual stories. Superman, Supergirl, and each of the Justice Gang heroes all receive a promising beginning in the DCU’s first movie installment.
Besides the main cast, Superman’s dozens of easter eggs set up a huge, lived-in universe. The Hall of Justice’s mural alone teases the arrival of dozens of DC heroes. Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen may also have a long DCU future ahead of them. And of course, Superman will likely return to the big screen sooner rather than later.
Superman’s Ending Teases An Even More Down-To-Earth Man Of Steel
Superman Has Distanced Himself From Krypton
Following his face-off with Lex Luthor, Clark Kent makes the decision to replace the recording of his Kryptonian parents’ last message with a montage of his childhood memories. During Superman’s final sequence, Superman smiles as he watches his child self play with Jonathan and Martha Kent. By this point, the DCU’s Man of Steel is more Clark Kent than he is Kal El.
David Corenswet’s DCU Superman is an especially selfless iteration of the hero. He goes out of his way to save and protect every single life on the battlefield, including a single squirrel. Even when the public unfairly turns against him, Corenswet’s Superman chooses not to engage in unnecessary conflict and continues to defend the innocent.
After learning that the Els sent him to conquer the Earth, Superman decides to distance himself from his Kryptonian heritage and doubles down on his Kansas roots. David Corenswet’s Superman will likely be even more humble and kind in future sequels and DCU appearances. This may be reflected both in his demeanor and in his physical appearance.
Superman’s Kryptonian Mission Twist Justifies A Change Of Logo
Superman May Change His Suit And Emblem In His Next DCU Appearance
David Corenswet’s DCU Superman costume is a blend of several comic book inspirations. For instance, it features the New 52 collar and the Kingdom Come chest symbol. In DC Comics’ Kingdom Come, Superman comes out of retirement to rectify the mistakes of a new generation of heroes, which isn’t too far from what Corenswet’s hero accomplishes in James Gunn’s Superman.
In the DCU, the Els’ traditional family crest naturally resembles Superman’s Kingdom Come emblem. So, after learning what his Kryptonian parents originally intended, David Corenswet’s Superman may not be too fond of what his Kryptonian symbol means. After the events of James Gunn’s Superman, he may choose to replace it with a new shape that better reflects his earthly values.
Superman is already known as a superhero who represents hope, humility, and the everyday person. To rebrand himself, Corenswet’s Superman could replace his Kryptonian emblem with a common “S” in his next DCU appearance. Rather than an extraterrestrial symbol or a metaphor, the letter “S” could simply stand for “Superman”, a hero with nothing to hide.
Superman’s ‘S’ Symbol Has Never Been More Fitting In A Movie Universe
Superhero Symbols Usually Require Updated Origins And Meanings
A simple, unambiguous “S” on David Corenswet’s next Superman suit could be the most perfect adaptation of a superhero logo. After distancing himself from Krypton, the classic “S” could emerge naturally as his chosen earthly symbol. The “S” would be clean, iconic, and free from the narrative gymnastics often used to explain superhero branding in modern adaptations.
In a simple interpretation, the “S” wouldn’t be just a letter worn because it happens to match his name, as in the Golden and Silver Age comics. Instead, it would represent a conscious declaration of Superman’s values in his adopted world. The letter takes on a far greater weight than simply being a carryover from comic book tradition.
At the same time, the classic “S” symbol wouldn’t need to have a contrived explanation behind it. It would no longer have to be an alien glyph, a family crest, or a metaphor. Previously, in the DCEU, Superman’s crest happened to look like the letter “S”, but its original meaning was “hope” in Kryptonian, and Earth simply interpreted it as a common “S”.
Superman’s New ‘S’ Logo Would Add Another Layer Of Meaning To Supergirl’s Upcoming Movie
Superman & Supergirl’s Relationship Could Be Much More Exciting Following Clark Kent’s Symbol Change
Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics, Craig Gillespie’s upcoming Supergirl will likely explore Kara Zor‑El’s time as a survivor of Krypton’s destruction. Kara has spent much longer dealing with the aftermath of Krypton’s downfall than Clark did. Hence, Supergirl’s identity is deeply tied to her planet’s culture, traditions, and symbols.
While David Corenswet’s Superman might feel comfortable swapping his Kryptonian crest for a simple earthly “S,” Kara would see that change as abandoning an important part of their heritage. In her eyes, the “S” shape might be one of her last tangible links to a lost world. Besides keeping the original symbol, Supergirl could fight Superman over his decision to leave Krypton’s imagery behind.
James Gunn has already teased that the DCU’s Supergirl is “a mess”. Milly Alcock’s Kara will likely be more confrontational than any previous live-action version of the character. Given her hotheaded personality, Alcock’s Supergirl may not hesitate to challenge David Corenswet’s Superman over any decision she doesn’t agree with, especially if it relates to their shared origin.
