NEED TO KNOW
Shaun White and Nina Dobrev are going their separate ways.
The champion snowboarder, 39, and The Vampire Diaries actress, 36, have ended their engagement and split after five years together, PEOPLE can confirm exclusively.

White and Dobrev were last photographed together on Aug. 31, 2025 in Los Angeles, holding hands while running errands.
But on Sept. 7, Dobrev walked the red carpet of the Eternity premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival without her 5 carat diamond engagement ring. She’s also unpinned her engagement post, which has been a staple on the top of her Instagram since White popped the question in October 2024.

The pair first met during a brief encounter at an awards show in 2012, but didn’t become acquainted until 2019 after the were both booked as speakers at an event in Florida organized by motivational speaker Tony Robbins.
Recalling the dinner together following the event, the three-time Olympic gold medalist told PEOPLE in January 2022, that he “actually didn’t know anything about [Dobrev]” at the time. However, he found it fascinating when several staff members requested a photo with her. “And I was like, ‘What’s happening? What’s going on?’ It was actually really funny,” he recalled.

The couple started dating in 2019 and moved in together at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. White took their relationship Instagram official in May 2020 after sharing a series of snapshots of Dobrev giving him a quarantine haircut.
That time spent together bonded them, White told PEOPLE. “Nina’s just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me,” he shared. “Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver — she really made that time in my life special.”

Throughout their romance, the athlete and Degrassi alum were fixtures on red carpets and often shared glimpses of their life together on social media — from vacations abroad to nights at Coachella. In 2022, Dobrev supported White as he competed in his fifth and final Winter Olympics in Beijing, an experience he later called “emotional” and “overwhelming.”
Ahead of the event, he teased a possible engagement to Dobrev while chatting to PEOPLE at Oasis Celsius Vibe House.
“We’re just enjoying our time together right now. No pressure,” he said. “But I told her, I was like, ‘Look, after the Olympics, I finally got my freedom to do whatever. And let’s just have fun and be together and support each other.'”

“But you never know. We’ll see what happens,” he added at the time.
White proposed to Dobrev in October 2024 during a surprise dinner at The Golden Swan in New York City. He orchestrated the proposal by telling her they were heading to a CFDA/Vogue event hosted by Anna Wintour, before popping the question with a 5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring.
At the time, the pair shared photos of the special night, with White writing on Instagram, “She said YES 💍♾️.”
“RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé,” Dobrev wrote on her post.
