Selena Gomez got the timing just right with Benny Blanco.
In an cover story interview with Allure published on Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Only Murders in the Building star gets candid about how her relationship with her fiancé might have not worked out if they’d met at a different point in time.
When asked if timing is everything, Gomez, 33, said, “Definitely,” adding, “I don’t think I would have been remotely mature enough.”

“It’s weird to think that only five years ago I wouldn’t have been in the right place, but I’ve learned so many lessons [since then] that led me to being the best partner I could be for Benny. And I believe the same with him,” Gomez said. “He’ll say, ‘Gosh, why did we waste so much time?’ And I always say, ‘You wouldn’t have liked me back then.’ I appreciate his heart, his kindness, his quirks…He’s one of the most grounding people in my life, and he makes me feel very normal.”
Gomez and Blanco, 37, began dating in 2023 after originally meeting in 2013 through Gomez’s mom, Mandy Teefey. The music producer popped the question in December 2024.
They released their joint album, I Said I Love You First, in March. And they recently went on respective bachelor and bachelorette parties with their friends in celebration of their upcoming nuptials.

Gomez also gave insight into wedding planning. “I have all my folders of inspiration (from scrolling through Pinterest) for the wedding, for cooking, for style… not sure what route we’re going to take,” she said.
Gomez previously spoke about timing in her relationship with Blanco in a February joint interview for Interview magazine. When asked for relationship advice, Gomez said she didn’t have “life figured out in any way” but focused on the importance of how Blanco treats her.
“My perspective on it, in a simplistic way, is that I actually feel valued. I feel seen. I feel respected. And I think that’s all I’ve ever really wanted,” she said.

Added Gomez: “I’ve kind of been alone in the world. I was alone for five years before we got together, and I think that really helped me appreciate someone like Ben.”
“He gets so weirded out by me saying this, but genuinely, 10 years ago, I wasn’t in a space in my life where I could have accepted the kind of patience, the kind of unconditional love that he gives me,” she concluded.
