Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 is just around the corner.

The Disney+ original series will return for its second season in December 2025. The show is based on the book series by Rick Riordan, who told PEOPLE in September 2024 that season 2 will be “bigger and even better” than its first season.

Although it will be developed from Riordan’s second book, The Sea of Monsters, the author shared that he is making efforts to separate the Disney+ show from 2010’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and 2013’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

“It was a very conscious decision that we said, ‘Okay, we’re not going to deal with the movie stuff,’ ” Riordan told PEOPLE. “I don’t want anything to overshadow the new young cast and take away from them.”

He continued, “This needs to be their moment, and we need to give them room to breathe and be these characters without worrying about anything that came before.”

What will Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 be about?

Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be based on Rick Riordan’s second book in his series, The Sea of Monsters. In the novel, Percy embarks on a dangerous journey to rescue Grover, who is on a quest to find the god Pan but is captured by the same Cyclops that once held Odysseus captive.

The upcoming season sees Percy embark “on an epic odyssey into the Sea of Monsters in search of his best friend Grover and the one thing that may save the camp — the legendary Golden Fleece,” per the official synopsis.

“With help from Annabeth, Clarisse and his newfound cyclops half-brother Tyson, Percy’s survival becomes essential to stopping Luke, the Titan Kronos, and their impending plan to bring down Camp Half-Blood — and ultimately, Olympus,” the synopsis reads.

Riordan also shared with PEOPLE that season 2 will delve deeper into the characters’ backstories through flashbacks, providing viewers with a richer understanding of their histories.

“The beauty of doing Sea of Monsters on the TV screen is that all those little stories that Annabeth tells us about her background with Luke and Thalia in the book aren’t just stories,” he told PEOPLE. “You can see them happening in her flashbacks.”

At D23 2024 in August, Riordan and several cast members teased that key elements from the book will make their way into season 2, including Grover’s wedding dress and the blossoming romance between Percy and Annabeth.

Who is in the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2?

Many familiar faces from season 1 will reprise their roles in the series, including Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood.

Additionally, Toby Stephens and Virginia Kull will return as Percy’s parents. Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, Glynn Thurman and Jason Mantzoukas will also reprise their respective roles, with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Adam Copeland returning as guest stars.

Season 2 also brings plenty of newcomers. Season 2 will welcome The Half Of It’s Daniel Diemer, Resident Evil’s Tamara Smart and The Deliverance’s Andra Day.

Diemer will play Tyson, Percy’s Cyclops half-brother; Smart has the role of Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus; and Day will portray the goddess Athena, who is also Annabeth’s mother.

Disney also announced that the Gray Sisters — who are introduced in chapter 3 of the book — will be portrayed by The King of Comedy’s Sandra Bernhard, Bob’s Burgers’ Kristen Schaal and All-American Girl’s Margaret Cho.

Per Variety, Veep’s Timothy Simons will also join the cast in a recurring guest role as Tantalus, the newly appointed activities director at Camp Half-Blood during Chiron’s mysterious absence.

Courtney B. Vance will portray Zeus, the god of skies and thunder, in the wake of Lance Reddick’s death. Reddick, who died in March 2023, made a posthumous appearance as Zeus in the season 1 finale, which was filmed before his death.

“Finding someone to step into this role going forward was not an easy task, but when icon Courtney B. Vance answered the call, we knew the Gods were listening,” executive producer Dan Shotz said in a statement on the series’ Instagram, per Deadline.

How did Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 leave off?

Season 1 was based off Riordan’s first novel, The Lightning Thief, and wrapped up with Percy confronting some of his most intense challenges yet.

The finale saw Percy battle Ares, the god of war, to retrieve Hades’ stolen helm and prevent a catastrophic war among the gods. With some help from the sea, Percy defeated Ares and brought the master bolt back to Zeus. Tensions nearly led to conflict, until Percy’s father, Poseidon, intervened, leading to a brief but meaningful father-son moment before Percy returned to Camp Half-Blood.

The celebration, however, quickly turned dark as Luke revealed his betrayal, admitting that he was the titular lightning thief, working to provoke the gods into war on behalf of Kronos, the vengeful Titan. With help from Annabeth, Percy fights off Luke, who then mysteriously escapes.

Afterward, Percy, Annabeth and Grover shared an emotional goodbye at the Thalia tree, and Percy returned home uncertain if Hades would uphold his promise to return his mother. In a heartwarming final scene, Percy wakes up to find his mother safe — after a dream sequence that set up the promise of new adventures ahead.
