Patrick Wilson is opening up about balancing parenthood with his acting career.
The actor tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview timed to the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites that his two kids — Kalin Patrick and Kassian McCarrell, whom he shares with wife Dagmara Domińczyk — have no interest in spending time on his movie sets.
Wilson, 52, has starred in the Conjuring film series with costar and close friend Vera Farmiga, who has two kids with husband Renn Hawkey, since the first installment in 2013. The pair respectively play real-life couple and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, and will be reprising their roles for the final time in the fourth movie.
Despite having dedicated over 10 years to the movie series, Wilson and Farmiga say their kids haven’t had much of a presence on set. “They come to set, but also our families have grown up on sets or are actors. So, it’s honestly the last place they want to be,” Wilson shares. “It lasts for about an hour. They’re like, ‘Okay, this is boring. We’re out.’ There’s not a lot of family hanging out on set usually.”

Wilson continues to explain that filming can also interrupt personal scheduling, noting that their kids have school and their own activities to participate in. “It’s much easier for us, as soon as we’re wrapped, to get on a plane and go back home. I was carving out weekends to go see my son, my oldest, play football in college last year,” he says.
In the same interview, Farmiga, who is mother to Fynn McDonnell and Gytta Lubov, notes that Wilson’s family “came more than mine.”
“A couple of times we couldn’t find the time. They never accommodate us. They always shoot during the school season. They never shoot it during vacation time. And they always shoot an ocean away. It hasn’t been the easiest to actually bring our families over,” she says of making the Conjuring movies.

Wilson shared last year that Kalin, 19, signed a modeling contract with a reputable agency in Los Angeles. “I couldn’t be prouder of this guy,” the proud dad wrote, in part, on Instagram. “Go for it, Kal. I can take a liiiiittle credit for your looks, but clearly you’ve always had an eye for the camera.”
At the time, the actor told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement, “From football player to fashion model, we are so proud of Kal for continuing to carve out his own path.”
Farmiga, 52, also often gushes over son Fynn’s N.Y.C. alternative band, Rosegold, on social media. She also posted a heartfelt birthday tribute to her daughter, Gytta, last year, writing, “Unicorn child, your heart is my treasure trove.”
“You teach me how to navigate unapologetically, pure, and bold. Keep growing in grace, Gyt. So carefree, fearless, brave and radiant. So proud of you,” the proud mom added.

The Conjuring: Last Rites follows the true story of the Smurl family haunting in Pennsylvania in the 1980s. The movie sees the return of director Michael Chaves from 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Previous installments in the series include The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, both directed by James Wan.
The extended movie universe also includes the Annabelle and The Nun series.
Speaking about her tight bond with Wilson, Farmiga tells PEOPLE, “It’s not easy being away from our families. And at the same time we’re delivering these performances that sometimes feel like a hot mess in the moment. His sense of humor is just the holy water to my hot mess.”
“Time and time again he is able to make me giggle, whether it’s bringing me a homemade smoothie or curating some bourgeois coffee or crooning metal with me. He’s been a great friend,” Farmiga continues.
