One Of Netflix’s Biggest Stars Returns This Week

Netflix has had quite a successful few months, with huge hits coming out from both their movie and television departments. One of their next originals, My Oxford Year, starring one of the biggest names attached to Netflix at the moment, Sofia Carson, is undoubtedly going to continue that success as we near the end of summer.

Netflix’s two biggest success stories recently were the animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which is still breaking records, and Squid Game season 3, which managed to build off the success of the previous seasons and deliver a hugely popular finale. They both give My Oxford Year the chance to ride off the good will that these projects have generated.

Carson got her start working on projects for the Disney Channel, with her most notable role being Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen, in the Descendants franchise. While she isn’t a bona fide movie star yet, she had a lot of success at Disney, and is now seeing a similar level of success at Netflix.

Carson’s Hot Streak On The Platform Will Continue Soon

Carson’s filmography on Netflix began with Feel the Beat in 2020, a dance comedy film that didn’t make much of an impact. It earned mediocre reviews and failed to find any sort of audience. However, it did manage to lead to much greater things down the line.

Her next Netflix film was My Little Pony: A New Generation, a reboot of the long-running franchise that was meant to have a theatrical release, but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented that, causing the film to go to Netflix. There, it earned great reviews and became the biggest movie on the platform for the month of its release.

After that, she appeared in multiple Netflix projects, including Purple Hearts, Carry-On, and The Life List. While this year’s The Life List was a relatively solid performer, Purple Hearts and Carry-On became instant hits. The latter in particular boasted huge viewership despite its middling reviews, all of which eventually led to Carson hosting Netflix’s TUDUM event earlier this year.

Now, Carson is coming back in full force with My Oxford Year, a romantic comedy based off the novel of the same name about an American woman who travels to England to study at Oxford University. She ends up meeting a local man named Jamie Davenport, played by Corey Mylchreest, and the two end up falling in love.

The original book was quite well-received when it came out in 2018, so hopefully the movie will be able to follow suit. While My Oxford Year isn’t a huge IP, it has been set up well to be a big success for Netflix, and has the opportunity to continue Carson’s reign of success on the platform.
