Octavia Spencer’s cult-classic Ma lives on.
On Wednesday, June 4, the Oscar winner, 55, and production company Blumhouse announced that her 2019 movie Ma is officially getting a sequel, in a joint post shared on Instagram.
“Giving you more MA to meme about. It’s official, @octaviaspencer returns in MA 2,” Blumhouse and Spencer wrote in a caption. “Don’t make her drink alone this time.”
“it’s going to be aMAzing,” Spencer added in a comment.
Ma saw Spencer team up with her The Help director Tate Taylor for a slasher in which Spencer stars as a lonely woman named Sue Ann who decides one day to purchase alcohol for a group of teens. She then begins hosting parties for high schoolers in her basement while growing obsessed with her newfound teen friends, and things turn violent.
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma,” Blumhouse CEO and founder Jason Blum said in a statement on June 4, according to multiple outlets.

“Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round,” Blum added.
Director Taylor, 56, previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2021 that he was surprised Ma developed an “afterlife as this cult thing” and that both he and Spencer were interested in making a sequel. (Spencer has indulged in internet memes about Ma in the past, and the movie even received a theatrical re-release in May 2025.)
“My idea is that she’s moved to another town, and she has open houses in another city and kills people in the open house,” Taylor said of a potential sequel at the time. “I think she’d be a real estate agent in the Pacific Northwest, and just murder White people looking at McMansions. That’s as far as I’ve gotten!”
