Netflix’s Xbox movie adaptation of a best-selling game receives an update on its script and progress. From The Witcher to the Arcane series, the streamer has seen some success in adapting games for the small screen. While the focus has mainly remained around developing TV series, Netflix is expanding its library to include more movie adaptations.
Recently, there’s been a rising interest in video game adaptations for the big screen. A Minecraft Movie grossed close to $1 billion, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $1.36 billion worldwide. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has also crossed the $1 billion milestone with the recent lease of the third entry.
Announced in 2022, Netflix has been actively developing a BioShock movie with The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence at its helm. In May, the director offered an update on the process and shared that the movie was still in development.
Kelly McCormick Offers An Update On Netflix’s Gears Of War Movie
Netflix’s Gears of War movie adaptation was announced in 2022 alongside a TV series. Produced in partnership with the game developer The Coalition, the movie will join Sonic Prime, BioShock, and Assassin’s Creed in the streamer’s video game adaptation portfolio.
After much delay, in May, it was announced that the Fall Guy director David Leitch was in talks to direct and produce the film along with his wife Kelly McCormick. Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote the screenplay for Dune with Denis Villeneuve and Eric Roth, will pen the script for Netflix’s adaptation of one of the biggest games on Xbox.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McCormick shed some light on where they were with Gears of War. McCormick shared that they are “writing right now” with Spaihts, and with The Coalition planning to roll out a new game in 2026, they wanted to plan “something relevant to the release of the new game.” Check out what she said below:
We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it. There’s a lot of energy from [Gears of War company] The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game.
It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP in his own way.
What This Means For Netflix’s Gears Of War Adaptation
It sounds like the Nobody 2 duo are planning to offer some solid news around The Coalition’s new game. Not making it to the release date hints that the new movie likely won’t come out in 2026. McCormick’s update confirms that the script is still in process, and more pieces will fall into place along the way.
Despite the movie already having a creative team assembled, the story and cast are still yet to be known. This means Gears of War might have a few tight deadlines ahead. On the other hand, this could also mean that fans might be able to learn more about the plot, cast, and release details when the new game is released.
