NEED TO KNOW
Don’t expect Miley Cyrus and Maxx Morando to ever celebrate their paper wedding anniversary.
The 33-year-old pop star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, Dec. 4, where she revealed that she has a long-standing fear of paper.
“Christmas, I’m known as a little bit of a Grinch because I have a qualm with Christmas. I hate paper,” she shared. “The real problem for me with paper is when people have dry hands and they touch paper and then it’s Christmas and it’s cold and everyone’s hands are dry and they’re all touching paper.”

Beginning to gag multiple times while discussing the topic, Cyrus admitted that her feelings about paper would be described as a “phobia.”
“It’s getting worse and so there does need to be some sort of intervention and I am gonna look into some sort of EMDR, being hypnotized about it because it is affecting my everyday life,” Cyrus admitted. “Someone gets an Amazon box, I’m sick, because the cardboard is the worst of it all. It’s extra dry and there’s packaging within it. That’s the best part, that’s really why I got engaged because I just make my fiancé open all the packages outside.”
“I think the first anniversary is paper or something right?” host Jimmy Kimmel then told Cyrus. “Uh nuh, not here,” Cyrus said with a laugh, adding that she would “absolutely not” be traditional with the anniversary gifts.
PEOPLE confirmed Cyrus’ engagement to musician Morando earlier this week. Kimmel, 58, asked Cyrus if she would be willing to sign her own marriage certificate.
“Here’s the thing, waxed paper, anything that’s got a smooth surface, that’s better,” Cyrus explained. “And from the last marriage [to Liam Hemsworth], I think I remember the paper is waxed, but I smoked one of those imaginary joints so I can’t really remember.”

On the topic of joints, Cyrus added that rolling paper isn’t a problem for her.
“That’s fine. First of all, my hands aren’t dry, okay?” she quipped. “And neither are the papers,” she added, before mimicking licking the paper.
Cyrus explained how wide-reaching the phobia has been for her, saying she won’t even open the envelope if someone sends her a letter.
“Books, again, I was so happy when they had a Kindle, when the Kindle was invented,” she added. “As long as they’re not dry. When I write my book, wax paper.”
The Disney Channel alum said her phobia first began when she was a child going on lengthy car trips from Tennessee to Canada with her mom, Tish Cyrus, and five siblings. She said her brothers would rub paper together to upset her in the car.
Thankfully, she now has Morando, 27, to help. Kimmel asked Cyrus whether her musician love was aware that if he’d waited several weeks to pop the question, he wouldn’t have had to get her a Christmas gift.
“This was Black Friday deal, baby,” she joked, flashing her ring. “It wasn’t, but he was smart that way. It might have been. I’m not sure. It better not have been.”
And when it comes to holiday gifts for the “Flowers” singer, Cyrus said avoids unwrapping any paper.
“I love stockings and anything that I want is usually pretty small and it can fit perfectly fine within a silk stocking — no paper. I prefer silk, no dryness,” she said.
A source told PEOPLE Cyrus is “thrilled” to be engaged to Morando and is living “exactly the life she wanted.”
“The ring is so her. It has a cool, boho-rock vibe to it. It’s beautiful. She didn’t feel the need to announce her engagement. Maxx is very private, and it’s influencing how she lives her life now,” the insider added.
