NEED TO KNOW
When audiences see Wicked: For Good in theaters this fall, Ariana Grande’s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba might be the main attraction. But according to costar Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode’s Nessarose will get a moment to shine.
Speaking with PEOPLE while at San Diego Comic-Con, the actor, 33, hinted at what’s to come for the upcoming sequel — specifically for Bode’s character Nessarose, who is infatuated with Slater’s character, a Munchkin named Boq.
“This is not a spoiler, I promise,” Slater said, noting that his teaser would make sense for fans familiar with the Broadway musical. “There’s something that never made it onto the original Broadway cast recording. And that’s a really special moment that I remember filming and just being like, ‘I cannot wait for people to see Marissa do this.’ “

Slater is likely referring to the “Wicked Witch of the East” song that has never been included in professional recordings of the stage musical.
In Wicked: Part One, the star-studded cast belted out beloved melodies like “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “No One Mourns The Wicked,” and “Dancing Through Life.” Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes in November 2024, director John M. Chu confirmed that the sequel will feature two original songs that weren’t performed in the stage musical.
While Chu has yet to confirm if “Wicked Witch of the East” is among those new songs, he did share in an interview with CinemaBlend in December that the song deserves attention.
“I don’t know what I’m allowed to say or not say at this point, because it’s still pretty early, but I will say it’s a great number,” Chu shared in a video shared on Twitter/X. “And I think it’s due time that people do get it so they can hear it over and over and over again.”

The second part of the two-film adaption of the Broadway musical picks up the stories of Elphaba and Glinda years later, after the pair concluded the first film in a dispute and Elphaba fled the Land of Oz, branded a “wicked witch” by her former instructor Madame Morrible (Michele Yeoh).
Wicked: For Good is in theaters Nov. 21.
