NEED TO KNOW
Madi Diaz and Kacey Musgraves ride for each other.
The “Ambivalence” singer, 39, opened up to PEOPLE about her friendship with the “Lonely Millionaire” artist, 37.
According to Diaz, the pair knew each other “peripherally” because they had many mutual friends who were musicians, but it was really during the pandemic that they started to spend time together.
“I love Kacey,” she says. “Kacey’s such a real girl’s girl, just a real f—ing ride or die. She will cut a bitch. You know what I mean?”

Diaz continues: “When I got home from tour one time, she picked me up and literally popped a thing of confetti. It was just the sweetest. She’s the sweetest.”
When the pair hang out, they usually “wake up too early and get on horses” before they watch the sunrise.
“She’s kind of like my on-the-ground outdoor partner in crime,” says Diaz.
In 2023, the pair even collaborated on the song “Don’t Do Me Good,” which was featured on Diaz’s 2024 album Weird Faith.
“It’s funny, because I always knew that ‘Don’t Do Me Good’ was going to be a duet, and then at some point it hit me that it should be with a friend rather than a romantic,” she says. “Like, I would rather be sitting next to one of my girls at a f—ing bar sharing a beer and talking through it.”
That’s when Diaz made the “delicate” decision to reach out to Musgraves about teaming up on the track.
“I know that we both respect each other’s world so much, we both work a lot and we ride horses together. We just chill together. So, it was really an interesting line to broach asking her, but she was just immediately like, ‘F—ing duh.'”

According to Diaz, the pair actually wrote half a dozen songs together. “I feel like sometimes songs need to live for a little bit for them to kind of figure out where they belong,” she says.
Diaz’s latest album Fatal Optimist is out now.
