NEED TO KNOW
Every day is an exciting one at Good Morning America, but spirits were particularly high on Monday as the ABC morning show celebrated its 50th anniversary.
On Nov. 3, anchors past and present gathered at 7 Hudson Square in New York City to mark the show’s milestone birthday. Former anchors Diane Sawyer, Charlie Gibson and Joan Lunden joined anchors Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan and George Stephanopoulos, along with other GMA faces, like Lara Spencer, Sam Champion and Ginger Zee.
Spencer, 56, who has been a part of the GMA family for over two decades, tells PEOPLE the morning’s broadcast was a “pinch-me moment, big time,” in more ways than one. “To look over and see Diane, Charlie, Joan, Nancy [Dussault] — it just was a trip down memory lane, not only for me as a member of the GMA family, but also before that, growing up with GMA and watching with my family,” she says.
The morning’s show was also “a really fun party behind the scenes,” Spencer reveals. “[During] every single commercial break, we would get up and kind of mingle and catch up,” she says. “So it was great. It was a big family reunion.”
However, according to Spencer, “every day is a party” at Good Morning America. “I’m not kidding you. It’s wild,” she says.
She adds, “It’s sometimes hard, but we laugh a lot, and it goes by really quick. And you leave here knowing that you’ve learned something and that, hopefully, the people that you’re talking to are informed and maybe have a smile and are ready to start their day.”

The show’s ability to bring happiness even amidst hard times is something that Zee, 44, also loves about it. “I love the truthfulness of it. There are many mornings that are not full of sunshine and rainbows, and I think Robin does a really great job at this — we just say it like it is and feel it like it is,” she tells PEOPLE.
“Not every day feels good in the studio, and that’s okay. That’s how life is. And so I think that’s one of my favorite parts, is the real part of it,” the meteorologist continues.
