NEED TO KNOW
Kid Cudi is making it known that he no longer has any space for Kanye West in his life.
During a revealing new conversation with Anthony Mason for CBS Mornings on Wednesday, Aug. 13, the rapper, 41, opened up about a myriad of topics, including-but-not-limited-to, his struggles with addiction and facing suicidal thoughts. Among those stark revelations, Cudi also touched on how his relationship with West, 48, formerly one of his biggest proponents, has fizzeld out completely.
“It’s a sad thing, you know?” Cudi said, to which Mason questioned, “Sad in what way?”

“The freedom that we experienced when we were creating, it just will never happen again, you know? And that is the heartbreaking side of things. But hey, I had a lot of things in my life break my heart and I’ve been able to survive and move past it,” he added.
“Did he break your heart in some way?” Mason questioned, leading Cudi to promptly respond, “I think he has over and over, multiple times.”

Cudi specifically cited West’s breaking of “the code of a friendship,” which led Mason to ask if he still feels as though he doubts the two will ever reconcile.

“Yeah,” Cudi said. “We’ve tried since then, you know? But we always have a falling out. He said some things that there’s just no coming back from. The comments that he’s had about Virgil Abloh are just some of the most evil, vile, disturbing f—– up things I’ve ever heard.”
The artist continued to double down on his disdain for West based on his comments about Abloh, who died at 41 after facing “a rare, aggressive form of cancer” called cardiac angiosarcoma.
“Every time he took a dig at Virgil, it just made me super angry. Virgil was an angel to everyone, there’s no coming back from that, man,” he stated. “Like, I’m done with you, and it breaks my heart, because I loved Kanye, you know? I really loved him, he was a part of my life changing. And at some point, he was a really good friend, but the man that he has become, I just don’t know that guy anymore. I don’t know him, I don’t know that version of him, and it’s really heartbreaking.”

During a 2018 New York Times conversation, West admitted that he had to remove aspects of “jealousy and fear” from his perspective towards Abloh, who was named Artistic Director of Menswear of Louis Vuitton in 2018, a position that West coveted for a large portion of his career.
However, during later comments made on social media, the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy creator doubled down on his disparaging remarks about Abloh, writing and deleting sentiments where he questioned his character and their friendship as a whole.
“I LOVE TRAV VIRGIL AND DRAKE DRAKE THE REALEST ONE OF THOSE THREE THOUGH HE NOT FAKE COOL HE’S JUST TALENTED AF,” West wrote on X, per Complex. “ AND YES ITS F— VIRGIL AND ANY OF THESE OTHER N—– THAT WORKED FOR ME THAN USED ME THEN WENT AGAINST ME I LOVE VIRGIL AND HE USED THAT VERY LOVE TO BEAT NIGERIANS ARE SUPER SMART.”
Though Cudi and West have a similar, longstanding history of collaborative efforts and friendship, their relationship has publicly been called into question on different occasions by both parties over the years.

In 2016, per Billboard, Cudi called out his peers on social media, writing, “I kept silent because I don’t ever wanna come off like some angry hater, but today, not only do I feel fantastic, I’m feelin like taking over. I already have. My tweets apply to who they apply. Ye, Drake, whoever. These n—– don’t give a f— about me. And they ain’t f—–‘ with me.”
Though he and West made up, and things remained relatively cordial until 2022, their relationship fizzed out again after West decided to cut off Cudi due to the latter’s friendship with Pete Davidson, who was dating West’s ex, Kim Kardashian, at the time.
Cudi took to X at the time to share his side of things, writing: “We talked weeks ago about this. You’re whack for flipping the script and posting this lie just for a look on the internet. You ain’t no friend. BYE.” In a follow-up post, he added: “God opens the door so the wrong people can exit ur life.”
In April of that same year, Cudi doubled down on his disdain for West yet again, posting on X, “Hey! So I know some of you heard about the song I got w Pusha. I did this song a year ago when I was still cool w Kanye. I am not cool w that man. He’s not my friend and I only cleared the song for Pusha cuz thats my guy. This is the last song u will hear me on w Kanye -Scott.”
Cudi further elaborated to Esquire in 2022 that he felt as though his relationship with West was one-sided and needed to come to an end. “I’ve been on every one of that man’s albums. He’s only been on two of mine. That should tell you something, and don’t think I didn’t ask.”
