The royal family is mourning the loss of one of its eldest members.
Katharine, Duchess of Kent, died “peacefully” while surrounded by family members on Sept. 4, King Charles III and Queen Camilla wrote in a social media statement. She was 92.
“It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent,” the family wrote in a Sept. 5 statement on X. “The King and Queen and all Members of The Royal Family join The Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss.
Charles and Camilla noted that her cousin Prince Edward, Duke of Kent’s wife “life-long devotion to all the organisations with which she was associated,” and noted they would remember her for her “passion for music and her empathy for young people.”
Katharine, born Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, married Edward in 1961 after meeting him while he was stationed in the military at Catterick Garrison, near her childhood home. The couple married in a ceremony that broke royal tradition by being held in Katharine’s hometown in Yorkshire, rather than in Windsor, setting off the duchess’ ability to distinguish herself among the royal family.
