NEED TO KNOW
Kate Hudson has some words of wisdom for her three children.
Speaking on the red carpet at the premiere of her latest film Song Sung Blue at AFI Fest 2025 on Sunday, Oct. 26, the actress, 46, opened up about her hopes for her kids’ futures.
After revealing that sons Ryder, 21, Bingham, 14, and daughter Rani, 7, are “all musical,” the Running Point star then shared some advice that she gives her brood with E! News.
“Just to make tons of mistakes and have fun and be rebellious,” she explained of what she tells her children. “Don’t let anybody tell you how to do your thing, you know? Be good people — that’s all I care about, and have real self-possession.”
But her main wish is that her kids are “content.”
“I want them to be happy — internally happy — and actually live just a good, like, content life,” Hudson continued to the outlet. “That’s what I want.”

The actress welcomed her eldest son, Ryder, with her ex-husband Chris Robinson in 2004, while Bingham, whom she shares with her former fiancé, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, arrived in 2011. Seven years later, she gave birth to her first daughter, Rani, with her fiancé Danny Fujikawa.
The mom of three revealing that her kids are musical comes after the actress released her first album — Glorious — in May last year, while her latest movie sees her star alongside Hugh Jackman as real-life couple and musicians Mike and Claire Sardina, who formed the band Lightning & Thunder in tribute to Neil Diamond.
Speaking to PEOPLE and other outlets at AFI Fest, Hudson opened up about being able to combine her two passions into one project. “It’s great. It’s my favorite … It’s all I ever wanted to do was do musicals. This obviously isn’t, but … I mean this movie in particular, everything that I’ve studied throughout my life or my career, I get to do in one film, and that doesn’t happen very often. So it was great,” she said.
Back in 2022, Hudson showed off her sons’ musical talents, sharing a video on Instagram of Ryder and Bingham rocking out on a guitar and drum kit in a garage.

Meanwhile, last year, Hudson exclusively told PEOPLE that daughter Rani was following in her footsteps and was “definitely her mother’s daughter.”
“She’s the best. She’s so magical,” the proud mom said. “She is just a total firecracker, but then she’s much more emotional than I think I was when I was little. She’s much more of an empath where I was like, yeah. She’s just very empathetic and emotional.”
