Justine Skye lit up the 2025 MTV VMAs red carpet over the weekend.
On Sunday, Sept. 7, the R&B star attended the award show in Elmont, N.Y., where she sparkled in a silver dress by Dsquared2, just days after she performed her song “Oh Lala” at the MTV Live: Push to the VMAs with Bacardí pre-party.
The “Bitch in Ibiza” singer gave PEOPLE a behind-the-scenes look at how she got ready for the big day.

“I actually styled myself for the performance. I wanted something that was comfortable to move in and very chill but still chic,” Skye, 30, tells PEOPLE. “My friend Von Ford styled me for the VMAs in a Dsquared2 dress with Maison Spoiled jewelry. This era for me is about feeling sexy, chic and free, and that’s what those looks felt like to me.”

The Bacardí event marked Skye’s live debut of “Oh Lala,” on which she collaborated with choreographer Donté Colley.
“I’ve been a fan of Donté’s work for a while so it was great to finally work together and add another dimension to the track,” she says.

While Skye says she was most looking forward to seeing Lady Gaga’s performance this year, she adds that her favorite VMAs moment was Beyoncé’s Lemonade medley at the 2016 show.
“[That] was so inspiring to me,” Skye says. “The whole project was such a powerful piece of narrative art, and then seeing it come alive on stage with all the creative choices she made was just unforgettable.”

Now Skye is preparing to release her next single “Yap.”
“With this new music, I’m focused on just having fun and making music people want to dance to, and that’s what this song is,” she says of the track. “I was working with Channel Tres and Baby Tate the day after someone told me I talked too much, and we ended up with ‘Yap.'”
