Few actresses have demonstrated such versatility across genres as Jamie Lee Curtis, and her new legacy comedy only proves it. While Curtis is best known for her horror movies, such as the Halloween franchise, which initially launched her to widespread fame, she has also long proven herself to be a brilliant addition to prominent comedy projects.
Her comedic breakthrough came in 1983’s Trading Places — in which she starred alongside Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd — earning her a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Following this, Jamie Lee Curtis also starred in the comedy A Fish Called Wanda in the leading role. However, it was 2003’s Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan that truly cemented Curtis’ comedic status.
Freakier Friday Earns An 80% RT Score
Now, Freakier Friday has earned an initial 80% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, this is the legacy sequel to Freaky Friday, and sees Curtis and Lohan return to their previous roles. While it’s not officially out yet, reviews have already come pouring in ahead of its theatrical release on Aug. 8, 2025.
ScreenRant’s own review of Freakier Friday by Rachel Labonte states that “it’s a legacy sequel done right,” by honoring the original movie, while also offering a fresh story that “balances the hilarity with the heartfelt.” Other critics, via Rotten Tomatoes, have painted a similar picture, saying that Curtis and Lohan as hilarious, and their reunion is full of chemistry.
Freakier Friday picks up decades after the first film, when Anna (Lohan) now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. However, as the family navigates this merger, Tess (Curtis) and Anna find themselves body-swapping once again. The upcoming comedy film will be distributed by Disney. Additionally, Freakier Friday will reportedly hit streaming later this year.
Our Take On Freakier Friday’s RT Score
Just days away from its theatrical release, Freakier Friday’s 80% score is a promising start. While some critics have branded the legacy comedy as an unfunny rehash of the original, the majority seem to praise Curtis and Lohan’s sequel, evidenced by Freakier Friday’s strong reception on the review aggregator site.
While opinions may vary when Freakier Friday hits theaters, as things stand, the film has proven itself an effective legacy sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis has had some big movies recently, appearing in films like The Last Showgirl (which earned her a fourth BAFTA nomination) as well as Everything Everywhere All at Once. Freakier Friday may just be another worthy addition.
