Jackie Tohn is opening up about how she stays comfortable on set — even when her scenes involve having her “buns out.”
Speaking with PEOPLE on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the 2025 InStyle Imagemaker Awards in Los Angeles, the Nobody Wants This star, 45, shared what makes her feel the best as a actress working on TV and film sets. “You have to be comfy in what you’re wearing,” Tohn revealed. “… This is the the InStyle awards and I’m not just saying this because of that.”
The Veep alum opened up about one on-set experience during which she had to wear an outfit that didn’t leave much to the imagination. “I did an episode of The Closer a million years ago, and I was a makeup artist and the put me in a leopard stretch skirt that was so short my butt cheeks were almost out,” she said, referring to Kyra Sedgwick’s police procedural.
“The whole day… I was pulling it and pulling it, and they were like, ‘Hey stop pulling it,’ ” Tohn recalled. “And it was like, ‘My buns are out on [TNT]’ or whatever channel it was.”

Although actresses might find themselves in rather uncomfortable costumes at times, Tohn said she leans into the experience and uses it to help her performance. “I think of course you have to be the character, and even tonight, I’m in this revealing… whatever. But I feel comfy,” she shared. “It doesn’t feel outside my body.”
“You just need to feel comfortable in what you’re wearing and it brings the confidence into he performance,” she continued, adding that her Nobody Wants This character, Esther, is always in a turtleneck. “I also think it informs the performance a lot. What you’re wearing and who you are.”

Tohn has previously spoken about Esther’s style in the hit Netflix series — particularly after her character got bold, blunt bangs for season 2.
Esther made the rash decision to get bangs as she and husband Sasha (Timothy Simons) were in discussion about whether to have another baby. She debuted the new look on a double date with Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) and then confessed to Joanne that she might be pregnant, which explained the sudden hairstyle change.

Tohn previously told PEOPLE that the haircut was “fun” for a surprising reason. “I had that identical haircut for a decade,” the actress said. “So I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve never seen myself like this.’ I was like, ‘Oh, right.’ ”
She said Esther’s look, which the show’s hairstylists achieved by using “realistic” clip-ins, reminded her of “when I thought I was quirky and cut bangs for nine years.”
“I think they’re really fun,” Tohn said of the controversial hairstyle, before sharing that right now, she’s content being bang-free in real life. “I was like, ‘I would love it if I didn’t,’ ” she said, opting for clip-ins instead of cutting her own hair. “I like them, but just — bangs are so hard, and they’re so hard to grow out, and I feel like they’re such a look that… I want to be able to do more [with my hair].”
Nobody Wants This season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
