Is Ezra Miller returning to Hollywood?
After making headlines for multiple public scandals and stepping away from the spotlight for a couple of years, the 32-year-old actor hit the red carpet at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival on Thursday, June 19.
The surprise return comes a month after Miller was also spotted at the Cannes Film Festival, an appearance they said was a favor to director Lynne Ramsay.
At Filming Italy, held on the island of Sardinia, Miller chatted with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale and revealed whether their recent appearances are one-offs or signal an official return to Hollywood.
When asked where their relationship currently stands with cinema, Miller told the outlet, “Tentative, I’d say. On tentative grounds.”

“I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world, who is Lynne Ramsay, who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers,” said Miller, who first worked with the director on 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Ramsay’s latest film, Die My Love, premiered at Cannes this year, and Miller is collaborating with her again, the director previously revealed.
“That will likely be the first thing I do, is a film that her and I are writing together,” Miller told Lo Speciale Giornale. “I’ve been writing a lot,” they added, “because you can do that in solitude, which has been friendly to me.”
As for why they stepped out at the film festival last month following their exit from Hollywood (their most recent role was in 2023’s The Flash), Miller had a simple explanation: “I came to Cannes because she asked me to come.”
“If there’s anything I really still believe in in my life, it’s devotion to one’s people, to one’s loved ones, to one’s friends, to one’s comrades, above all else,” they told Lo Speciale Giornale.

And it was no walk in the park, Miller said. “I didn’t necessarily want to go to Cannes. I had a bit of a hard time,” they explained, adding that it was “a tough re-entry point.”
The actor continued, “If you’ve been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo … [is] there, you know what I mean? It’s not an easy re-entry, but yeah, I did that for Lynne. I would do anything for Lynne.”
“This is the stuff I can still know and keep a track on, is like, I ride for my friends,” the Perks of Being a Wallflower star added. “That’s always been true of me, and always will be true of me.”

In the same interview, Miller also said that they are also “grateful” to learn which people in their life and career “are not that,” and said they hold “remorse” for many of their previous actions.
“When you work in this industry,” the actor said, “you will find yourself in deep, deep relation with a lot of people who do not give a single f— about you or your well-being at all. Not that I don’t hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did, and for a lot of things that happened in that time, but I’m really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that.”

The release of Miller’s last movie, The Flash, was overshadowed by controversies surrounding the star, who in 2022 faced a series of arrests, including for disorderly conduct and assault charges.
In Hawaii, the actor pled no contest to a disorderly conduct charge over incidents at a karaoke bar, and was later arrested and charged with second-degree assault after allegedly throwing a chair. Later that year, Miller was accused of grooming two children and of burglarizing a home in Vermont. (Some of the grooming allegations have been withdrawn, while Miller pleaded not guilty to the burglary and then entered a guilty plea to lesser misdemeanor charges.)
In August 2022, Miller publicly addressed their troubling behavior in a statement to PEOPLE. “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” the actor said. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
