Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Masika Kalysha’s estranged husband Jamar Champ was reportedly killed in a car accident involving a vehicle that was traveling the wrong way on a Houston freeway. He was 38.
The crash occurred shortly after 12 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 28, according to a news release from the Houston Police Department.
A silver BMW was heading westbound in eastbound lanes on 6600 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) when it struck a silver Tesla Cybertruck head-on. The BMW caught on fire, and the Cybertruck collided with a blue Freightliner 18-wheeler, HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant R. Dallas and Officer R. Young said in the HPD’s release.
The Cybertruck driver was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police. The driver of the Cybertruck was later identified as Champ by his friends and family, per KHOU.
He was formerly a football player at North Dakota State University, who played one season for the team in 2005, per KVRR.
The driver of the BMW involved in the crash was also killed. Their name has not yet been released by officials. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, according to HPD.
An autopsy will be performed to “determine if impairment played a role” in the accident, police told KHOU.
On Tuesday, Kalysha seemingly alluded to Champ’s death in a post to her X account. “God woke me up at 2:00am… I couldn’t sleep,” she wrote. “I didn’t know why. Jesus Christ I just received the worse news of my life. Pray for me and my kids please”
In an Instagram video, Kalysha requested that media outlets “refrain from posting information,” but did not comment further on Champ’s death.
“I just ask, respectfully, that you guys refrain from posting information until I do. Because word spreads fast to children and although my kids aren’t on social media, a lot of their friends are, and a lot of, all their parents are,” she said in the video. “And I don’t want my kids to find out at school before I can tell them.”
Kalysha and Champ were married in 2021, and share a daughter, 3-year-old Amari.
“I am in shambles please respect my family and my children at this time,” Kalysha wrote in her Instagram video.
In an Instagram Live video shared in December 2023, Masika revealed she had been “separated” for all of that year. In 2024, she said during an interview that she was “going through mediation” with her “soon-to-be-ex-husband.”
