NEED TO KNOW
Fletcher’s got a new “Boy” in her life.
In an interview with Rolling Stone published Thursday, June 5, the singer-songwriter shared details behind the making of her new song “Boy,” which will be featured on her forthcoming studio album Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me?
On “Boy,” Fletcher — who’s openly queer and largely written about her relationships with women in the past — reveals she’s fallen in love with a man.
“There will be people that feel disappointed and feel confused and have questions,” Fletcher, 31, told the outlet of “Boy,” which is out now. “Girl, I had questions and I was confused too. It shocked me just as much as anybody else.”
Despite her new flame, Fletcher (full name Cari Elise Fletcher) assured that she’s “so proud to be queer” and “that is not something that has ever wavered or changed.”
“Being queer for me is this lens that I get to view life through,” she said.

When asked if she was still seeing the person who inspired the song, Fletcher didn’t answer directly, but did declare that she’s “getting to experience love again.”
“That is the most magical feeling in the entire world. I met a boy who is somehow way more connected to his feelings and his emotions and his heart than even I am,” she said.
Elsewhere in her conversation with Rolling Stone, Fletcher said that her aim with “Boy” was to “capture and talk about” her queer journey.
“I had met a boy and started feeling romantic and emotional feelings and we kissed. I was like, ‘What the f— is going on?’ My whole world felt flipped upside down,” she explained.
She continued, “I’ve always written about my love stories and my heart and very candidly written about what I’ve been experiencing. ‘Boy’ is just another love story. ‘Boy’ is just one revelation of many. It’s not an album about a guy.”
Fletcheralso said that her Lyme disease diagnosis in early 2023 changed her perspective.
“[I] went through a really intense healing journey which allowed me to pause. I started having so many questions about my career and my purpose,” she explained. “I think through allowing myself to ask those deeper questions about this fixed dream I thought I would always be chasing, my heart opened in a way I wasn’t expecting, and I fell in love with a boy.”

FLETCHER’s third studio album, Would You Still Love me If You Really Knew Me?, which represent revelations in her life, is out on July 18.
In June 2022, Fletcher opened up to PEOPLE about coming to terms with — and celebrating — her fluid sexuality.
“I grew up in a really conservative small town. I was raised going to a Catholic church. There’s just a narrative that I’ve had from a young age that all the ways that I wanted to love I was wrong for,” Fletcher said of her hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey. “When I hooked up with a girl for the first time and it was so amazing, I was like, ‘Hmm. If I’m going to hell for this, it’s kind of lit. I like this.'”
