Former Miss Universe Ieda Maria Vargas has died at 80. In 1963, she made history as the first Brazilian contestant to win the international pageant.
Per an official statement released on Vargas’ official Instagram page, the pageant queen died on Monday, Dec. 22. She would have celebrated her 81st birthday nine days later on Dec. 31.
“At this moment of immense pain, we thank all the manifestations of affection, respect and solidarity received. Ieda was a woman of light, who marked the history and lives of many people, leaving a legacy of love, joy, and inspiration,” the caption read, as translated into English.

Details about Vargas’ cause and manner of death have yet to be confirmed. Her daughter, Fernanda Vargas, commented on the announcement post to share some meaningful words about the 1963 titleholder.
“My partner, wonderful mother, fought like a warrior 💔 ❤️ I love you,” Fernanda said in Portuguese, adding on her own Instagram Stories, “Thank you for giving me the honor of living all this time by your side.”

The Brazilian pageant organization also confirmed the news on social media, sharing a photo of the former titleholder on Monday, and honoring her legacy in the caption. The national institution remembered her win as more than “just historic,” but also crucial to shaping the coveted Miss Universe title.
“Ieda opened ways when there were no references yet. In 1963, she put Brazil at the center of the world and showed that our women had voice, presence and power to go beyond the stage,” the official Miss Universe Brazil Instagram wrote in Portuguese. “She changed perspectives, inspired generations, and helped build what we know today as Miss Universe.”
The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) took to the comments of the post to extend “its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all who were touched by the life of Iêda Maria Vargas, Miss Universe 1963.”
Punctuating the heartfelt note with a heart and dove emoji, the international pageant added, “May her legacy continue to inspire generations to come.” The MUO also shared footage of her win and crowning in a commemorative post on X.
