NEED TO KNOW
Eric Stonestreet missed out on a recent Modern Family reunion, and he voiced some funny concerns about why he wasn’t included.
On Monday, Sept. 29, Jesse Tyler Ferguson — who played Mitch Pritchett on the ABC hit sitcom — shared a photo from a recent reunion with Julie Bowen, who played his onscreen sister Claire Dunphy, and Ed O’Neill, who starred as the family patriarch Jay Pritchett.
In the photo, which was shared on Instagram, Ferguson, 49, and O’Neill, 79, flanked Bowen, 55, who looked chic in a belted, blush outfit.
“The Pritchetts Sept 27 2025,” Ferguson simply captioned the sweet reunion snapshot.
Fans flocked to the comments section to celebrate the new pic of some of their favorite stars from the show. However, Stonestreet, who played Ferguson’s on-screen husband Cam Tucker on the series which ran from 2009 until 2020, shared some playful concerns about why he and some of his other former costars were missing from the get together.
“Where is Sofia [Vargara, who played Gloria Ramirez Delgado Pritchett]? Where is Ty [Burrell, who played Phil Dunphy]? Did he die again!? Where is Ariel [Winter, who played Alex Dunphy]? Sarah [Hyland, who played Haley Dunphy]! Rico [Rodriguez, who played Manny Delgado]!? Nolan [Gould, who played Luke Dunphy]!?! Aubrey [Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily Tucker-Pritchett]?!”
He continued, writing, “Is there drama behind the scenes? Are you all fighting!? Do you hate each other now? Wait. Where am I!? Why am I not there!? Did I snub you!? Did you snub me!? There MUST be SOMETHING going on!”
His cheeky caption seemingly referenced a November 2023 reunion, which Burrell was unable to attend. In photos, shared by Vergara on Instagram, the cast held up a photo of the actor who played the Dunphy family patriarch.
His absence led to rumors online that the actor had possibly died, which Burrell addressed during an appearance on Ferguson’s Dinner’s On Me podcast.
“Well, I died,” he said when Ferguson brought up the reunion. “Remember how I died? Do you remember when I died?”
In reality, the actor was unable to attend because he was undergoing a surgical procedure. However, he seemingly implied that sharing photos from his hospital bed would likely not ease concerns about his health.

Speaking to PEOPLE that same month, Burrell noted that the cast remained close, even if he ran into some issues making it to all the reunions.
“We’ve had a couple of gatherings, but I wasn’t able to make it to a couple of them,” he shared, explaining, “I live in Utah now, so the logistics have gotten a little bit trickier.”
Despite that, he stressed that “everybody has stayed in touch,” adding, “I’m incredibly grateful to know all those people.”
While Modern Family came to a close in 2020, the cast has remained close over the years with frequent reunions.
In fact, the bond is so strong that in January 2025, Stonestreet described his on-screen family as a group that will be with him for the rest of his life.
“We are such a close unit,” he said. “We all are in communication with each other.”

Continuing, Stonestreet added, “We all love each other. It was no doubt from the beginning of that,”
“This is dark and macabre, but I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I have a whole lot of new people that I’m going to grow old with and know for the rest of my life,’” he shared, emphasizing that he realized early on how powerful the bond was.
Stonestreet and Ferguson have both even revealed that there were tentative plans for a spinoff focused on their characters.
Speaking to Graham Bensinger in September 2024, Stonestreet explained that he and his onscreen husband were “hurt” when the show didn’t pan out.
“I think Jesse and I felt like they thought of us as the old guys, or something like that, that didn’t seem worthy of keeping those characters going. It just felt a little hurtful,” he explained.
He added that the show, likely “would have been a slam dunk.”
