Eric Braeden Says Filming ‘Titanic’ Was ‘Boring’ Compared to ‘Young and the Restless’

Filming Titanic in 1997 was only the tip of the ice berg for Eric Braeden.

Braeden, 84, has starred as Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless since 1980. In a new interview with fellow soap stars Rebecca Budig of The Bold and the Beautiful and fellowY&R star Greg Rikaart, the actor compared his experience on the set of the Oscar-winning film to his 40-year run on the soap.

“People have no clue! Nighttime actors, theater actors who have done it all have no clue what we do, none,” Braeden told Budig, 52, and Rikaart, 48, for the inaugural episode of their podcast, Soapy. The full interview, during which he gets candid about the soap opera genre, debuted on Tuesday, July 8.

When asked how he felt about his behind-the-scenes experience on film shoots, including Titanic, the actor said, “It’s bloody boring.” In James Cameron’s film, Braeden portrayed John Jacob Astor IV, who was the wealthiest passenger aboard the Titanic and died when the ship sank in 1912.

“We make very few friends doing a soap, because we have no time to get to know each other,” Braeden joked on the podcast. “I remember all the friends I did nighttime with — Burt Reynolds, Jim Brown, Raquel Welch, Planet of the Apes… I knew them all for years, because you sit and you bulls—. You have time in between scenes.”

He explained that in primetime television and on film sets there is “time in between scenes while they’re lighting the stuff,” which differs from soaps where “you have no time for that, none. You come on the set, you work. Boom.”

Rikaart has starred alongside Braeden as Kevin Fisher on The Young and the Restless since 2003, and has also played Days of Our Lives’ Leo Stark on and off since 2018. Budig played Greenlee Smythe on All My Children between 1999 and 2011, spent four years on General Hospital, and currently stars on The Young and the Restless’ spinoff, The Bold and the Beautiful.

Braeden has been nominated for the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series eight times for his role on Y&R, and won in 1998.
