Letitia Wright addresses returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the new Black Panther in Avengers: Doomsday. Phase 6 is kicking off in July with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which means the MCU is getting closer to its next round of Avengers movies with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. One hero who is finally coming back to the MCU is Shuri, as Wright was one of the many Avengers: Doomsday cast members announced during Marvel Studios’ live-stream event in March.
In a new interview with Flip Your Wig, Wright opened up about returning as Shuri, a.k.a. Black Panther, for Avengers: Doomsday, following the character’s arc in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. As Avengers: Doomsday is currently filming, Wright shared the following about coming back to the franchise for the massive Phase 6 installment:
It’s just an ensemble of greatness, so I was just really excited to be a part of it. I’ve been a part of it before but in a more smaller way. Now I have a little bit more. So yeah, just a great family, literally coming off [the] set, filming yesterday. Put my best into it, working with the Russos is always amazing. Just a great team.
Wright was also asked if she could address whether T’Challa Jr. would appear as a second Black Panther in Avengers: Doomsday. However, in true MCU fashion, Wright had to give a very cryptic response, as she said the following:
I can’t say anything. I’ve sworn to secrecy. All I can say is that I did my filming yesterday and it was great! We are having a great time.
What Letitia Wright’s Black Panther Return Means For Avengers: Doomsday
Hearing how it is a massive deal for Wright to come back as the MCU’s new Black Panther in Avengers: Doomsday is key for a number of reasons. For starters, since the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ending, Wright has not been seen in the franchise, and by the time Avengers: Doomsday comes out, it will have been half a decade since fans last saw her in the MCU. Even though Wright was in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday will be a very different context for her as she now becomes one of the main heroes.
When it comes to any rumors or speculation about T’Challa Jr. somehow being in Avengers: Doomsday as another Black Panther, it’s not a shock that Wright is avoiding confirming anything related to that. If this is even remotely what is going to happen in Avengers: Doomsday, this will be something Marvel Studios hopes to keep a surprise for as long as possible. However, the scenario where an older T’Challa Jr. shows up in Avengers: Doomsday isn’t impossible, given how the MCU timeline plays with time travel and variants.
From everything Wright shared about her excitement to return as Shuri for Avengers: Doomsday, it will be exciting to see where she is at as Black Panther after these few years and the dynamics she will have with the other characters who are confirmed to appear in the film. With a massive threat like Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, time will tell how Shuri deals with the iconic Marvel baddie. As Avengers: Doomsday gets further into filming, more clues will finally begin to emerge about how Black Panther factors into the movie as the MCU gets ready to take on Victor von Doom.
