Demi Lovato brought Poot out of the basement.
To celebrate Halloween, the “Fast” singer revived her 10-year-old viral Poot meme. On Thursday, Oct. 30, Lovato, 33, posted an Instagram carousel showing off her 2025 costume. Poot originated on Tumblr in 2015 when a fan took a washed-out photo of Lovato and created a fictional backstory, claiming it was her long-lost twin sister who had spent her entire life locked away in a basement.
The first photo included the original 2015 snap for reference beside the pop star in her costume, perfectly recreating the look.
She then posed in her garage as if Poot was a scary creature creeping in — even including Poot’s ominous shadow. Lovato then followed it up with a TikTok of her pretending to be Poot, screaming for help and trying to get out of the garage.

Her TikToks continued, and she added a video to the ongoing “House Tour” trend, which includes users showing off their homes to the track from Sabrina Carpenter’s Man’s Best Friend album. The video included Poot showing off all the necessities in her “home,” including some bubble wrap, a water heater and her cleaning supplies.
Along with cheeky TikToks, Lovato added another snap of herself posing as Poot, as well as the original photo nestled in her makeup bag.
Lovato concluded by sharing a video of her glam team who helped transform her into Poot as she sat in her makeup chair.
“happy halloween and happy one week of intd!!! been so locked in this era thought i’d let pootvato out 🔒🤍,” she captioned the post.
Lovato’s husband, Jutes, commented: “Alright Halloween is over everyone. Pack it up. It belongs to demi this year better luck next year.”

This isn’t Lovato’s first time poking fun at the meme. More recently, she included a brief image of the meme in her “Fast” music video, which dropped on Aug. 1.
She also told PAPER magazine in September that she’s embracing the memes about her. “An incredible, powerful way to take the power back is to own the memes,” she said. “Because then, if I’m laughing, nobody can laugh at me. I’m laughing at me.”
Months prior, she joked about the photo on TikTok and lip-synced to a soundbite with the caption, “When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…”
“Wow, what an offer,” Lovato mouthed to the audio. She captioned the video, “And I’m never letting her out.”

In August 2023, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer celebrated her birthday with a cake featuring the photo of Poot.
“When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me,” she told Harper’s BAZAAR in July of that year. “And I was like, ‘Oh, no. That’s a really bad angle.’ But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn’t my face.”
“But it was definitely weird when it went viral,” she said, adding that “it’s really funny to look back on.”
