NEED TO KNOW
David Henrie is revealing why he missed Selena Gomez’s wedding — and what he told her before her big day.
During his appearance on the Zach Sang Show on Wednesday, Oct. 8, Henrie — who is Gomez’s former Wizards of Waverly Place and current Wizards Beyond Waverly Place costar — explained why he couldn’t attend the singer-actress’ Sept. 27 wedding to Benny Blanco.
Back in August, just one month before the wedding, Henrie, 36, told Parade Magazine that he would “100%” be in attendance, and was “very excited” for the nuptials in California. At the time, he noted he would only skip the ceremony if he was “doing something that takes me away with my family or work or whatever.”

Henrie might have jinxed himself because he told podcast host Zach Sang, 32, that he ended up missing the wedding because he had to work on an out-of-state project and couldn’t make it back in time.
“Unfortunately, no,” Henrie answered to if he attended the wedding. “I’m about to announce a project that I was out of state on, and there was no way I can get back. I literally tried every single way to try to get back.”
“Breaks my heart,” he added.
Before the ceremony, Henrie and his wife, Maria Cahill, “talked all about” the wedding from “the dress” to “the planning.” Despite missing the special day, Henrie was still able to give Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 37, his “one piece of advice on the wedding.”
“The best advice I got right before my wedding, someone pulled me aside and said, ‘Hey dude, hold your wife’s hand and take like a solid minute and just look around the room. Look at your wife and go, ‘This is our minute,’ and look around the room and just remember,’ ” said Henrie, who wed Cahill in 2017. “To this day, that’s like my one memory from my wedding, is that moment.”
He continued, “I passed that on of just like, take a moment to just take it in ’cause everyone’s going to be coming up to her and everyone’s going to be saying ‘hi,’ pulling her in every direction. I hope they did that.”
Speaking to PEOPLE in September, Henrie — who plays Gomez’s character Alex Russo’s brother Justin Russo — said that he and his wife “talked a lot” about wedding planning with Gomez and Blanco as they were organizing their big day.
He explained, “Because [there’s] so many different ways to go with a wedding these days, and so much that goes into it that [you’ve] got to know what you want.”

While Henrie was unable to make it to the celebration, several other stars from Wizards of Waverly Place attended the wedding. Gomez’s onscreen parents, Maria Canals-Barrera (Theresa Russo) and David DeLuise (Jerry Russo), and Jennifer Stone (Harper Finkle) were among the celebrity guests.
Maria attended the wedding with her husband, David Barrera, and their daughters. Meanwhile, David went with his wife, Julia DeLuise. Stone was spotted with two friends, fellow Disney Channel alums Maiara Walsh and Garrett Clayton.

Gomez’s TV dad penned a heartfelt message to her alongside a throwback photo of them on Instagram on Oct. 2. He congratulated the newlyweds and described their wedding as “a perfect day, full of love and joy.”
“My wife @jules_rules_berlin and I were honored to attend, and we had so much fun dancing the night away at my ‘pretend daughter’s’ wedding. I’m so happy to now have a ‘pretend son-in-law,’ ” he wrote in part. “When I started working with Selena she was just 14 years old. Now she’s a wife, beginning her new journey with a wonderful man by her side. And hopefully one day I will be a pretend grandfather.”
