NEED TO KNOW
Dave Franco is sharing how Zac Efron injured himself during a hilarious fight scene in their 2014 comedy Neighbors.
Franco, 40, appeared on the Wednesday, July 30 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast to promote his new horror movie Together. During his interview, host Alex Cooper noted that Efron, 37, once said that he broke his hand while filming a scene for the movie during which Efron and Franco’s characters grab each other’s crotches during a fight sequence.
“It’s a really good question. I’m trying to remember. It definitely wasn’t because my penis was hard,” Franco said with a laugh, after Cooper asked him to explain how Efron injured himself. “I’m trying to remember if I was wearing a cup and he came in just really strong. I think it was a dislocated thumb, to be fair, but it happened. There’s a scene where I think we’re both grabbing each other’s crotches at the same time. And I just think he came in with enough force from the wrong angle and it’s a nice little anecdote now.”
Franco and Efron costarred as fraternity brothers Pete and Teddy in Neighbors, which follows Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as a married couple with an infant daughter who find themselves struggling to get along with the fraternity when it moves into a house next door. Efron himself said that he broke his hand while filming the scene in question during a 2014 interview on The Tonight Show.
“I don’t know what it is man, something happened,” Efron said at the time. “Those Franco brothers just have balls of steel, but I did legitimately break my hand.”

During Franco’s Call Her Daddy appearance, host Cooper told the actor that people may have thought Efron’s anecdote about breaking his hand was because Franco was “just randomly hard on set.” Franco pointed out that Neighbors contained a plot point in which his character has the ability to obtain an erection on demand.
“Now that I think about it, not to walk through the whole synopsis of Neighbors in this interview, but he grabs my crotch and we’re both holding on, like, ‘Who’s gonna let go first?’ and then my character actually, to get him to let go, I have a trick where I go Zen and I know how to get hard on cue,” Franco said. “So, I do get hard in his hand and that’s what makes him let go.”

“And can you do that in your real life?” Cooper asked, to which Franco laughed and said, “No.”
Franco Efron, Rogen and Byrne reprised their Neighbors roles in the 2016 sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. In Franco’s latest film, he and his wife Alison Brie portray a married couple who experience bizarre and terrifying forces that physically bind them together after moving to a rural neighborhood.
Franco and Brie’s new movie Together is in theaters now.
