D’Angelo’s son is speaking out following the death of his father.
Michael Archer II, 27, paid tribute to his late dad after the Grammy-winning singer’s death, which came just seven months after his mother Angie Stone died in a car crash.
D’Angelo (born Michael Eugene Archer) died on Tuesday, Oct. 14 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was 51.
“I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me,” Michael tells PEOPLE in a statement. “I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”

A source previously confirmed D’Angelo’s death, telling PEOPLE, “He was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months.”
D’Angelo’s death came months after singer Angie Stone, Michael’s mother, who died earlier this year.
Stone was in a car crash in March. Following a performance in Mobile, Ala., Stone and several others were traveling to Atlanta through Montgomery County, Ala. when the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van’s driver Leethel Carter allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
