The Odyssey is now slated to open up ticket sales about a year before the film’s release. This movie is Christopher Nolan’s first film post-Oppenheimer. He will adapt the classic Homer epic poem of the same name, directing a superstar cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, and Mia Goth.
The hype is already building up for the film, as The Odyssey released a trailer that ran before many showings of Jurassic World Rebirth. This trailer showed Odysseus lost at sea, and set up part of the main conflict at hand. With a while to go until the film’s release, however, there is a lot yet to be revealed.
Another development has been made prior to The Odyssey’s release, however. According to the Harkins Theatres website, the tickets for the Nolan film will be “on sale soon.” While an exact date was not listed, it is thought that tickets will open in the coming days or weeks for AMC and IMAX theaters with IMAX screens.
What This Means For The Odyssey
This Is An Event Movie
This is unusual for one key reason: The Odyssey does not come out until July 17, 2026. As such, if these tickets are to go on sale within the next few days, they are doing so a full year before the film releases in theaters.
While this is an atypical timeframe to have tickets available, this strategy more fully paints the picture of The Odyssey as an event movie. Most are unlikely to buy film tickets more than a couple of months in advance, but the mere fact that this is an option being made available shows that these theaters view this film as special.
This method is also likely to up the box office haul for The Odyssey. Pre-sales are usually a good indicator of how well a movie will fare by the time it hits theaters. In this case, the Nolan film had an incredibly long time to amass presales. Thus, it is more likely to have a big opening, with potential momentum to follow.
Our Take On The Odyssey Ticket Sales
Nolan Can Help Make This Film Huge
Theaters have good reason to think that The Odyssey might do well in theaters. Oppenheimer made nearly $1 billion upon its 2023 release, and most Nolan films have been similarly high-performing. People want to see his movies in premium formats, and they know that they will sell out, so some level of advance booking will be necessary.
If successful, this will truly show that Nolan can make a hit out of anything. Most of the time, the top box office hits are superhero films (which Nolan has also made) or technology-heavy sci-fi like Dune: Part Two or Avatar.
But Nolan is different. He can make a hit out of a biographical feature, or out of a time-bending film about an important day in war history. If he can do it with these films, he can do it with a modern interpretation of a classic text with The Odyssey.
