NEED TO KNOW
Chris Evans is a little bummed out not to be involved with Avengers: Doomsday.
When Evans, 43, spoke with ScreenRant about his new movie Materialists for an interview published Monday, June 9, the actor said he talks to his friends and former colleagues Robert Downey Jr., as well as filmmakers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, “all the time” as the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directing duo, and Downey Jr., 60, embark on filming the fifth Avengers movie in London.
“It’s where Pedro is right now,” Evans said, referencing his Materialists costar Pedro Pascal, who will reprise his role as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in July’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps in Doomsday. Evans himself famously portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America in several Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in the 2010s, beginning with 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and ending with 2019’s Endgame.
“I mean, it’s sad to be away. It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party,” Evans said of the currently-filming Doomsday, which features Downey Jr. returning to the Marvel party as the villain Doctor Doom.

Evans’ frequent Marvel costars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Paul Rudd will also appear in Doomsday, as will the entire cast of Fantastic Four, the recent hit Thunderbolts* and several actors from the X-Men franchise, among others.
Though Avengers: Endgame saw Evans’ Steve Rogers give up the Captain America mantle and retire from superhero duty for good, the 2019 movie did not actually serve as Evans’ last MCU appearance. The actor made a surprise cameo as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine in a nod to his two turns as the Fantastic Four character in the 2000s, years before the MCU began and he took up Captain America’s shield.

Evans previously denied reports that he would appear in Doomsday while speaking with Esquire in January for a piece on Anthony Mackie’s leading role in this year’s Captain America: Brave New World. “That’s not true, though,” he told the outlet when asked about Deadline’s December 2024 report that he would appear in Doomsday. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it.”
“Yeah, no—happily retired,” he added at that time.
Evans’ new movie Materialists, which follows a love triangle between him and characters portrayed by Pascal, 50, and Dakota Johnson, is in theaters June 13. Avengers: Doomsday is expected to release Dec. 18, 2026.
