NEED TO KNOW
Charlie Day is keen to share the screen again with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis.
While stepping out to the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia 20th anniversary celebration in Los Angeles on Tuesday, July 1, the 49-year-old actor told PEOPLE he would be down to make a cameo in Ellis’ latest show, A Man on the Inside.
“I would love to be on her show, but I know they just wrapped their second season. I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed for a third,” Day says.
Ellis, 46, stars in the Netflix comedy series as Emily, the daughter of widower and retired college professor Charles Nieuwendyk, played by Ted Danson. Charles takes a job as an investigative assistant for a private detective and goes undercover at a San Francisco retirement home to find a missing ruby necklace.

The series premiered in November 2024 and was quickly renewed for a second season, which is slated for release later this year.
Asked if he would make his cameo in character as a senior — aging makeup and all — Day jokes, “I’ll do it. I could do sort of a limp — whatever they want. I’ll show up.”
Day went on to praise his wife’s work in the series and share his pride in the accolades and attention the role has brought her.
“I mean, it’s just the greatest thing,” he says. “I, of course, adore my wife, and she’s a fantastic actor. Everyone knows her from Sunny and loves her on Sunny, but she’s been in all these great things, like Licorice Pizza, and she’s incredible in that.”

“Mike Schur is such a great showrunner. And obviously, to get to work with Ted and this year Mary Steenburgen [Danson’s actress wife], I’m really excited that she got that opportunity and that she’s getting introduced to a whole new audience,” Day tells PEOPLE.
Day and Ellis previously worked together on It’s Always Sunny. The latter has portrayed The Waitress — the object of Day’s character Charlie Kelly’s obsessive, unrequited love — in 37 episodes across 16 seasons of the long-running FX series.
In addition to starring in the show, Day also serves as a writer and an executive producer.
He and Ellis married in New Orleans in 2006 and welcomed a son, named Russell Wallace, in December 2011.
