Charlie Cox thinks his wife’s relationship with their dog can sometimes be a little too much.
“My wife and our dog have a very effed-up relationship,” the actor, 42, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview of spouse Samantha Thomas.
“They’re way too close,” Cox — who stars opposite Zooey Deschanel and a canine costar in Merv — adds jokingly with a laugh.
“Because I’ve been working a lot and I’ve been away, our dog has definitely replaced me in the family,” he continues.

Cox and Thomas both have employment history with Marvel — with Cox starring as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in various projects, and Thomas previously serving as a producer for the company.
The pair met while they were working together on the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil. A revival and continuation of the show is currently brought to life through Daredevil: Born Again, which streams on Disney+.

Cox and Thomas wed in September 2018, and they are parents to two children together: a son and a daughter.
Back in January, Cox, who was born in England, became a U.S. citizen, giving him dual citizenship to both countries.

Cox’s latest project is what brought his family’s dog into their lives. After working on Merv — a rom-com about a recently separated couple who take their dog on a trip to raise his spirits, but end up reconnecting when sparks are reignited — they got their own furry friend.
“And a goldfish,” the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAGs) winner tells PEOPLE with a smile. “Don’t forget the goldfish.”
Deschanel, 45, for her part, also got her family their own animal friends: two cats. “I don’t have a goldfish, but my cats do love tuna,” the actress teases. (Deschanel, who is engaged to Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott, shares daughter Elsie and son Charlie with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.)
