The Broadway community is mourning one of its own.
Bret Hanna-Shuford, who appeared in The Little Mermaid and Wicked, has died months after being diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and T-Cell Lymphoma, his husband Stephen Hanna-Shuford announced. He was 46.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband and Papa in the universe,” Stephen—who shared son Maverick with Bret—wrote on their joint Broadway Husbands Instagram account Jan. 3. “Bret Hanna-Shuford left this world peacefully with love surrounded by his family.”
He added, “Our hearts are broken but we will continue to make him proud of us…”
Members of the theater community expressed their condolences in the comment section of Stephen’s post.
“This is devastating beyond words,” Merrily We Roll Along’s Lindsay Mendez commented. “Sending prayers, love and light, & holding you and yours close in our hearts.”
