NEED TO KNOW
The Blue Bloods legacy lives on!
Boston Blue, a spinoff of the beloved police procedural that came to an end in December 2024, is starting fresh with new stories and characters. While the series is described as a “universe expansion” of the former series, fans can rest assured that Donnie Wahlberg is back to reprise his role as detective Danny Reagan.
Although Boston Blue is a spinoff of the long-running CBS show, Wahlberg’s character is the only confirmed main returning character — with the exception of a guest appearance from Bridget Moynahan — as he moves from New York City to Boston and joins the city’s police department. After moving to the new town, Danny gets a new partner, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), who is part of a well-known law enforcement family.
Wahlberg — who starred in the original show alongside Tom Selleck, Moynahan, Len Cariou and Will Estes — admitted that he was initially hesitant to do a spinoff, but his mind changed after reading the script and learning more about a larger universe for the show.
“Suddenly it was like, ‘Do I really wanna do a spinoff?’ I didn’t know,” he said during a screening and Q&A on Oct. 14. “And this idea was really good. And the script was really good. I looked at it and I saw the possibilities of weaving Blue Bloods’ world into it, and I saw a chance to play Danny in a different way.”
Here’s everything to know about the Boston Blue season 1 release schedule and where to watch the Blue Bloods spinoff.

Season 1 of Boston Blue will premiere Friday, Oct. 17, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. Prior to the series premiere, Wahlberg teased at a press event, per TVLine, that “no Blue Bloods fans will be disappointed.”
“Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family’s. You can’t have Danny without Reagans,” he shared in May 2025. “There’ll be connective tissue to the old family. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories and still telling the Reagan stories.”

“Reunited and it feels so good!” Wahlberg captioned an Instagram selfie of himself and Moynahan on set in July 2025. “So excited to have my dear friend, and TV sister @bridgetmoynahan, join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of #BostonBlue!
