Billy Bob Thornton is shedding light on why he and Angelina Jolie ultimately ended their marriage.
The Landman star, 70, recently spoke about being married six times during an interview with Rolling Stone.
Thornton has been with his sixth wife Connie Angland for over 20 years — they eventually married in 2014 — and they share daughter Bella, now 21. He is also dad to three other kids.
“So,” he told the outlet, “I found the right spot to be. The other times I got married were just like, you had a little too much to drink one night and somebody said, ‘We should get married.’ You go, ‘Yeah, okay.’ I always tell people, at least I was trying.”

Thornton was married to Jolie, his fifth wife, from 2000 to 2003. He told the outlet they “had a great time together.”
“That was one of the greatest times of my life,” said Thornton. “She and I are still very, very close friends. And that was the one that ended up being a really civilized breakup. We simply split up because our lifestyles were so different.”
Thornton added that public fascination about their relationship was “pretty weird” at the time.
“When we met, I was the more famous one,” he said. “And then when we got together, for some reason, the people and the media are very interested in celebrity couples, that seems to be a very popular thing. So it was weird. We couldn’t go anywhere. I mean, we did, and then of course we had times when we would say things that became sound bites or whatever.”

Prior to Thornton, Jolie was married to Jonny Lee Miller, then most recently to ex-husband Brad Pitt, with whom she shares six kids.
In February 2025, while reflecting on her career at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Oscar-winning actress shared that she remains friends with ex-husband Miller, 53, when the topic of their 1995 movie Hackers came up.
“I just talked to him. I love that — I get to see my ex-husband with 2,000 people,” Jolie joked to the festival attendees.
“Amazing. It’s so nice to see it. Actually,” she continued at the time, “it’s funny, I don’t really watch my own films, and so I [don’t] think I’ve seen it since the premiere. But I do have a wonderful relationship with Jonny, and he and I have sons the same age, and I’m so happy.”
