NEED TO KNOW
Anne Hathaway is channeling her inner pop star for her next movie.
A24 released the first trailer for Mother Mary on Tuesday, Dec. 2, showing Hathaway, 43, as a pop star named Mother Mary, who attempts to reconnect with her old friend, a fashion designer named Sam (Michaela Coel) to spooky and dangerous ends as she begins to embark on a comeback tour.
“Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Coel, 38) on the eve of her comeback performance,” reads an official synopsis for the movie.
Directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the film also stars Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, with Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. Twigs, Jack Antonoff and Charli xcx also contributed original music for the movie.

In a Vogue cover story published in July, Hathaway said she “had to submit to being a beginner” when it came to learning how to inhabit the mind and body of a pop star while preparing for the movie.
“The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner,” she said. “Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”

Deadline first reported that Hathaway and Coel, 38, were set to star in the movie together in March 2023. Mother Mary was one of a number of independent films that received a waiver from SAG-AFTRA to film during the 2023 actors’ strike, as IndieWire reported in July of that year.
Hathaway posted a black-and-white photo of herself from Mother Mary’s set on Instagram in July 2024 and described the movie as “one of the most extraordinary, transformative experiences I have ever had” in a caption.
Mother Mary is in theaters in April. Hathaway also has several other high-profile 2026 movies: The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1), The Odyssey (July 17) and Verity (Oct. 2).
