And Just Like That…, it’s over.
On Friday, Aug. 1, Michael Patrick King announced that the Sex and the City revival series that follows Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis’ beloved characters, Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York, will end with season 3.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the showrunner said, “And Just Like That…. the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end.”
“While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop,” he wrote. “Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.”
The team behind the series made a conscious decision not to reveal that season 3 would be its last so as not to “overshadow” the story itself.
“SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the world ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season,” King continued, referring to Parker, 60.

He concluded the statement, which was shared as a joint post on AJLT’s account and HBO Max’s, with a message of thanks.
“It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”
The news is heartbreaking for the cast, who reacted on their own social medias.
In a post on her Instagram Stories, Davis, 60, shared King’s statement and added her own words in tribute.
“I am profoundly sad,” she wrote. “I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working so hard on our show with deep love.”

“And to our loyal fans, we love you forever and ever,” she concluded the post.
Nixon also reposted King’s statement to her Instagram Stories, but didn’t add any further comment.
There are two episodes to go in the series before fans have to say goodbye to their favorite New Yorkers.
Episode 10 of the season, which would usually have been the finale, aired on Thursday, July 31, and saw plenty of drama as Ella Stiller became the latest guest star to appear.
Her introduction was a shocking one, as Brady (Niall Cunningham), the teenage son of Miranda (Nixon) and Steve (David Eigenberg), revealed he’s having a baby with her character, Mia.
As if that revelation wasn’t shocking enough, Brady then revealed he only found out because he ran into Mia, who is far along enough that she’s showing, and informed his parents that Mia doesn’t want him to be involved in the baby’s life.
Miranda, of course, had to intervene, and paid a visit to Mia at the salon where she works, where she peppered her with questions about the pregnancy and the father before revealing who she was.
As the series approaches its crescendo, Carrie’s love life is also up in the air.
News of the series’ ending comes after Carrie (Parker) said goodbye once again to Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), whom she first romanced in season 3 of Sex and the City, though their relationship ended after she admitted to having an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth).
Aidan returned in season 2 of And Just Like That, much to fans’ delight, and he and Carrie tried to make things work a second time around, but couldn’t swing it.

They split in episode 9, after Aidan admitted to still having trust issues dating back to Carrie’s infidelity in Sex and the City.
The breakup wasn’t a “fiery debate,” executive producers Elisa Zuritsky and Julie Rottenberg told TVLine, but rather a symptom of the fact that “we all knew their problems were systemic enough that they would not survive.”
Though they knew that the split was coming from “pretty early on” in crafting this season, Rottenberg said she “did start to worry” about the choice they’d made as they began to approach filming it.
“I think part of it is Sarah Jessica and John Corbett have such an incredible bond and chemistry and relationship as both actors and as the characters,” she told the outlet. “I got a little panicky. ‘Should we not be doing this? Should we not be breaking them up?’”
