NEED TO KNOW
Amelia Gray had some support on The Beauty set for her acting debut.
The 24-year-old model, who is the daughter of Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin, tells PEOPLE that there were two actors on the set of Ryan Murphy’s new FX show who really assisted her on the set.
“Ben Platt and Megan Trainor both helped me tremendously,” Gray shares at the Beauty premiere in New York City on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
“As did Ryan Murphy, of course. I mean, I obviously couldn’t have done that without him. Like he very much directed my whole scene, and I’m incredibly grateful,” she adds.

She notes that Trainor, 32, had “gotten acting classes before” and helped pass on what she learned, while Platt, 32, also gave her helpful tips while making her feel comfortable on the set.
“Obviously, Ben is an EGOT actor. He’s won every single award there is to win. So I was kind of nervous shooting a scene with him,” she recalls. “You spent a lot of time together as actors, I found out. And as we spent more time together, he was so helpful.”
“I think for me, obviously, since I don’t talk in my job [as a model], usually I just show up. It’s a lot easier for me to work with my body and a lot harder for me to work with my reactions and sort of like my responses and my talking. That’s hard,” she adds with a laugh.
The model, who made her runway debut at the age of 16 for Dennis Basso’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection, opened up last year on Vogue’s podcast The Run-Through about pursuing a career in the fashion industry.
“Almost every girl’s story is, ‘I was walking on the street and someone scouted me,’ but that’s completely opposite to my story,” she shared. “I scouted everyone else. I had already known that this is what I wanted to do since I was 5 years old. I have no idea why.”
Gray explained that she had to “find everyone” in order to get jobs. “And so my story’s different, but also my passion is different,” she continued. “And I think that I don’t really understand how a lot of the girls don’t feel the same way that I do because to me it’s so exciting and it’s my dream and it’s what I love to do and I could not imagine doing anything really else.”

The model said she is also “well aware” of her “nepo baby” status, and said she was “extremely grateful for that.” However, she noted that the title doesn’t guarantee a job. She shared that she had auditioned for Tom Ford’s runway show multiple times and has never gotten to be in it, but isn’t giving up just yet.
“I have been to the Tom Ford casting every single time I land in Milan since my career started, and I have gotten so close to getting it,” she shared. “They fit me in clothes, this and that, nah, nah, nah. And I’ve never gotten it because it’s always just been one person doesn’t support me, which is fine. I love a challenge.”
She continued, “Like, make it harder for me because it’s so boring if you get everything all at once. Like that, you know, careful what I wish for. I need to, like, careful what I put out there. But, you know, you have to work for things.”
