NEED TO KNOW
It’s the end of the road for a handful of Netflix shows after just one season.
As the streamer has rolled out more original content over the years, they haven’t chosen to renew every show after its first season. While several of the hit series — including Emily in Paris, Ginny & Georgia and Ransom Canyon — have been renewed, other series have gotten the axe after the first season.
Pulse, which was a medical procedural drama, originally premiered in April and made it to the worldwide Top 10 for four weeks before Netflix announced that it was canceled. Meanwhile, The Waterfront, which was a drama about an influential family in North Carolina, was also canceled after one season despite impressive performance.
While Netflix hasn’t released any official information as to why some of the shows were canceled after one season, there could be several factors — including cast members’ schedules, budgets, viewership and competing titles.
Here’s everything to know about the shows Netflix has canceled after one season.

In August 2025, Deadline announced that The Waterfront was canceled after one season. Showrunner Kevin Williamson was reportedly made aware of the decision and relayed the information to the cast and crew members.
The Waterfront, which premiered June 19, followed the wealthy and prominent Buckley family as they battled their crumbling empire and complicated personal lives in the fictional town of Havenport, N.C. The series starred Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner and Maria Bello.
The cancellation may have come as a shock to some viewers, because The Waterfront spent five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 and spent three of those weeks as No. 1. The viewership reached an all-time high of 11.6 million views after its first week, the outlet reported.
“While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1,” Williamson wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post after the cancellation was announced. “It was one of the best experiences of my life!”

Pulse initially intrigued viewers because it was Netflix’s first original medical procedural drama. The series, which premiered in April 2025, spent four weeks in the global Top 10, peaking at No. 3 with 8.5 million views. In total, Pulse garnered over 20 million views with 162 million total viewing hours, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The show may have struggled with ratings because HBO Max released their own medical procedural, The Pitt, around the same time. The Pitt season 1 finale aired the same day that Pulse dropped its entire season.
The medical drama, which was created by Zoe Robyn, starred Willa Fitzgerald, Colin Woodell, Justina Machado, Jack Bannon, Jessie T. Usher, Jessy Yates, Chelsea Muirhead, Daniela Nieves, Néstor Carbonell, Jessica Rothe, Santiago Segura, Ash Santos and Arturo Del Puerto.

Around the same time that Pulse was canceled, it was also reported that The Residence was not getting a second season. The show was a murder mystery drama comedy set in the White House that starred Uzo Aduba as the primary detective.
Shonda Rhimes and her production company, Shondaland, developed the series with creator Paul William Davies. The creators originally planned for the series to follow new murders each season, but that is no longer in the cards.
The Residence, which premiered in March 2025, spent four weeks in the global Top 10 and peaked at No. 2 with 8.8 million views and reached over 177 million hours of viewing, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Similar to the other shows, Netflix has not publicly shared why it canceled the murder mystery. However, Deadline reported that the show struggled with both its budget and competing shows. For instance, the hit limited series Adolescence premiered the week prior and became a major hit.
In addition to competing with other shows, The Residence was also more expensive to produce, as it was reported to be the largest recreation of the White House that spread across 20,800 square feet, per Tudum. Sources told Deadline that the creative team tried to reduce the budget for subsequent seasons, but it didn’t come to fruition.
The Residence’s cast featured Aduba, Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Edwina Findley, Bronson Pinchot, Mary Wiseman, Julieth Restrepo, Al Mitchell, Mel Rodriguez, Ken Marino, Jason Lee and Jane Curtin.

Netflix created their own neo-Western drama show with the series Territory, which premiered in October 2024. After airing for one season with six episodes, the series was officially canceled in February 2025, per C21 Media.
“We are incredibly thankful to have had the chance to work with the wonderful cast and production team to bring Territory and the stunning Australian outback into the homes of millions around the world,” Netflix’s director of content for Australia and New Zealand, Que Min Luu, said in a press release at the time. “Although we won’t be continuing with another season, we eagerly anticipate working with all of them again in the future.”
The Western series, which was created by Ben Davies and Timothy Lee, starred Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor and Sam Corlett.
Territory made its way to the global Top 10 in the first week of its launch and reached 6.4 million views in the first four days, according to ScreenGeek.
