NEED TO KNOW
Life is anything but quiet for Bethany Hamilton, who shares four kids — Tobias Dirks, Wesley Phillip Dirks, Micah Dirks and Alaya Dorothy Dirks — with husband Adam Dirks.
“We are all are adjusting to life as a family of six,” Hamilton captioned a September 2023 Instagram post following the birth of her daughter. “It sure is a balancing act … But we are overjoyed to share life with Alaya and our boys!”
The ESPY-winning surfer, who lost her left arm in a 2003 shark attack, continued, “Each child holds their own element of uncertainty as we learn who they are and how to parent them, but each is also a precious gift from God!”
After marrying Dirks in 2013, the couple welcomed their first son, Tobias, two years later. Hamilton told PEOPLE that though she had a hard time adjusting to motherhood initially, she was “so glad” it was her life now.
“Becoming a mom is something I always knew was going to be an amazing part of my life, or at least I hoped that, but it just came so much sooner than I had anticipated,” she told PEOPLE in April 2018. “I had a lot of fears entering into motherhood, I didn’t know what life would look like after.”
Hamilton gave birth to her second son, Wesley, in 2018, followed by Micah in 2021 and Alaya in 2023. She and her husband have been raising their family in her home state of Hawaii.
Here’s everything to know about Bethany Hamilton’s kids: Tobias, Wesley, Micah and Alaya.

Hamilton and Dirks welcomed their first child on June 1, 2015. In an Instagram post announcing his birth, the pro surfer revealed that Tobias was named after his great-grandfather and that his name meant “The goodness of God.”
Like his mom, Tobias also loves to surf and has been playing in the ocean since he was 6 months old.
The eldest Dirks boy has traveled more than most kids his age to attend his mom’s surf competitions and appearances. She told Hawai’i Magazine in June 2020 that Tobias celebrated his first two birthdays in Fiji, and that she and her husband homeschool their kids so they can join her on the road.
“Even though I do a lot, I also feel like I’m still a full-time mom,” Hamilton told the outlet. “The only time they’re not with me is when I’m out in the ocean, pretty much. They just are a part of our life very thoroughly and just come along for the ride.”

In March 2018, Hamilton announced she was now a mom of two with the arrival of her second son, Wesley. She wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of her with her family that she was thankful for her “two lil guys” after choosing to keep the sex of their baby a surprise.
Wesley was also introduced to his mom’s sport at an early age. In her 2020 interview with Hawai’i Magazine, Hamilton said that she took the then-2-year-old on at least one wave every time they hit the beach.
“I just want them to appreciate the ocean and wave riding and hopefully be able to share that with them because I want to be surfing until I’m old,” she said.

The couple welcomed their third boy on Feb. 14, 2021.
Like his older brothers, Micah has also been learning to surf with his mom.
Hamilton has previously been open about why it’s important to her to include her kids in all that she does. In December 2024, she shared an Instagram Reel of her and Dirks working out with their kids by setting up an obstacle course after a sedentary day.
“This is not the ‘American dream’ where everyone is decompartmentalized from each other,” she captioned the video. “My hubby and I felt the consequences of being separated at times from our families growing up. So we want to flip that narrative and do as much of life together as we can. We want connection, togetherness and memories that hold!”

In June 2023, Hamilton gave birth to her daughter, Alaya, and announced her arrival in an Instagram Reel where they both wore matching flower crowns.
“Meet our beautiful daughter Alaya Dorothy Dirks!” the surfer captioned the video. “We are feeling really grateful to God for the blessing of family. We are honored for this opportunity to raise our children, to love, serve, protect and guide them through life!”
Hamilton shared that her daughter also enjoyed surfing in a June 2024 Instagram post celebrating her first birthday.
“Grateful for our daughter as we celebrate her 1st birthday this month!” she captioned two photos of her with Alaya posing on a surfboard. “She has been such a joy and delight every day! The love our whole fam has for her is so sweet! And she officially likes surfing.”
