NEED TO KNOW
The terrain appears endless in Landman with dirt roads and blue skies.
Season 2 of the Billy Bob Thornton-led series premiered on Nov. 16, taking viewers back to the sunny and slick vistas of the oil boom towns in West Texas.
Landman was created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, and it’s based on the Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown, about the oil boom in the western part of the Lone Star State.
The series is set in West Texas, and it is also filmed in the state — a fact that Sheridan is proud of.
“SGS Studios isn’t just about sound stages or tax incentives — it’s about reclaiming the independence and grit that built this industry in the first place,” Sheridan said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News, referring to his production complex located in Fort Worth, Texas.
He continued, “Texas offers something rare: the space to dream big, the freedom to build fast, and a community that still believes storytelling matters.”
While Landman has roots in Texas, the show did leave the state to shoot some scenes for the new season.
Here’s everything to know about where Landman is filmed, including the real-life locations and famous sights.

Landman is set in the towns and oilfields of Midland and Odessa in West Texas, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
The series is based on the podcast Boomtown, which premiered in 2019 and was hosted by former journalist Wallace.
Wallace grew up in West Texas and spent a year after college working as an oil rig crew member, also known as a “roughneck.” A 2019 oil boom inspired Wallace to write the Texas Monthly article, “The Permian Basin Is Booming With Oil. But at What Cost to West Texans?,” which would become the Boomtown podcast.
“I grew up in a small town called Andrews,” Wallace said during a talk at West Texas A&M University in April 2025, per the Amarillo Globe-News. “My family are cotton farmers, oil field hands, and working cowboys. Though I was steeped in these traditions, I knew early on that I wanted to be a writer.”
Wallace attended Texas State University and then earned a master’s degree in writing from the University of Galway in Ireland.
“I came back to the States and worked as a roughneck on the rigs surrounding my hometown,” he continued. “It’s really hard to come in as an outsider to oil and gas because it’s so complicated — so complex — and I gained such an appreciation for the men and women who are out there doing the work.”
When it comes to life on the oil rig, in January 2025, Wallace told Deadline that the series “is very accurate.”
“My uncle who works in the oil field for the last 30 years will nitpick every little thing,” he explained. “But I think for the most part, it’s safe to say you get a decent sense of what it’s like working in oil and gas out there.”

Landman is filmed in West Texas, but only certain snippets of the show. Production for Landman mostly takes place in and around Fort Worth, located in the northern part of the state.
The series is set in Odessa and Midland, and according to the Odessa American, some scenes were shot in the actual West Texas towns.
Still, most of the filming was done in Fort Worth, located about 30 miles from Dallas, which is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex region.
Filming for Landman happened around the city, but it was also the first production to shoot at Sheridan’s SGS Studios. The production complex is 450,000 square feet with several soundstages and it’s on the AllianceTexas campus, according to the real estate company Hillwood.
Per The Dallas Morning News, Landman shot its second season at the new studio location after previously filming in warehouses that were “gutted” to fit production.
In April 2025, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the series was filming scenes for season 2 in Jacksboro, a small town about 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth. Viewers also saw Jacksboro in season 1.
Per the Visit Fort Worth website, additional shooting occurred in other nearby towns, like Cresson and Weatherford.
The production also did season 2 filming in Dallas, according to WFAA News.

Eagle-eyed Texans will be able to spot famous Fort Worth locations in Landman.
Per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the season 2 premiere featured the Fort Worth Herd’s cattle drive at the Fort Worth Stockyards. According to the Stockyards’ website, it is “the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive.”
The episode also included shots of the Will Rogers Memorial Center’s Pioneer Tower and Dickies Arena, the latter of which is used for concerts and sporting events.
Other filming locations from around the city include the Bowie House hotel and the Texas Christian University campus.
The real headquarters for the American Association of Professional Landmen, was even used for filming, per the Visit Fort Worth website.
“It’s becoming a place where people want to be,” Thornton told CBS News Texas about filming in the state. “It’s growing here and I love it. I love it for Texas, I love it for the people.”
Has Landman filmed anywhere outside of Texas?
Emerson Miller/Paramount+
Landman is almost entirely filmed in Texas, but production did cross state lines for season 2.
As the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in July 2025, a casting notice was posted for extras to play casino-goers for scenes shot in Durant, Okla., located about 120 miles northeast of Fort Worth.
The outlet noted that while a specific casino location wasn’t revealed, the Choctaw Casino & Resort is located in the city.
